Carmelo Anthony's son Kiyan Committed to Syracuse, NBA Star's Alma Mater
Carmelo Anthonythe son Kiyan Anthony committed to his father's alma mater Syracuse University.
Kyan, 17, confirmed his decision to commit to Syracuse on the Friday, November 15, episode of his father's “7PM in Brooklyn” podcast. “It was hard to lose weight,” said the young athlete.
Kiyan, the top men's basketball coach in his 40s, shared that he narrowed his top choices down to Syracuse, Auburn and USC, before deciding on his father's alma mater. Carmelo, 40, played basketball for Syracuse from 2002 to 2003, and helped secure New York's only college NCAA championship as a freshman.
“I'm frustrated, but I'm happy because you're happy,” Kiyan's mother, La La Anthonysaid on the podcast about his son's decision. (Kian is the only child of La La, 42, and ex-husband Carmelo. Us Weekly they confirmed their separation in June 2021 after 16 years of marriage.)
“I think it's a wonderful decision,” he continued. “They're an amazing school and they've worked really hard to recruit people and make him feel very important. They were big, and I mean, it's better to fill the shoes. But at the same time, this is his time and his way and it's time for him to create his own.”
Carmelo, on the other hand, was happy that Kiyan reached the decision after some “flopping”. The former NBA star said, “I'm glad you made this decision.”
La La added, “And I think it's important to say, Kiyan really made this decision,” noting that Carmelo “recently gave him ideas from all the schools” but didn't pressure Kiyan to choose Syracuse.
Kiyan told ESPN on Friday that his father's connections at the school helped him in his recruitment, but noted, “Ultimately, it was my relationship with the staff.” He also had a strong relationship with coach Adrian Autry.
“From day one, when they first hired me, they made me feel like family,” Kiyan told ESPN. “My father's name at the center is special, but I want to go in there and make a name for myself, and I've done that with my dedication in the offseason, by practicing in the morning, playing in camps, playing in the district.”
Kiyan continued, “I'm going to do whatever coach Autry needs me to do. We talk a lot, especially late at night, about how we can make Syracuse basketball better. Off the court, Coach is very cool. You can go out with him on Friday night. He is still young and communicates with all his players; you are very related.”
