Carrie Underwood Makes a Comeback at the 2024 CMA Awards
Carrie Underwood made a surprise return at the 2024 Country Music Association Awards.
There came a moment Cody Johnsonwho competed for five medals at this year's event, took the stage to perform at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville on Wednesday, November 20. While Johnson, 37, was introduced alone by the athletes. Luke Bryan, Lainey Wilson again Peyton Manningthe country singer had Underwood, 41, join her for a performance of her hit “I'm Gonna Love You.”
Johnson began the song solo before Underwood came backstage to sing the second verse. His appearance was greeted with applause and cheers from the audience.
Underwood, 41, stepped out in a gown with an orange bodice, white flowing sleeves and a matching skirt. She paired the look with a statement blue necklace and glossy makeup. Her long blonde locks have signature waves.
After finishing the verse, Underwood joined Johnson for the heart-wrenching ballad chorus. Between words, Johnson gave Underwood a shout out for joining him.
“Yes, that's Carrie Underwood,” she exclaimed, much to the delight of the crowd.
When the song ended, Underwood and Johnson got down on one knee and held each other sweetly as the crowd rose to their feet to cheer the singers on. The camera then panned to a few other stars including Thomas Rhett again Teddy Swims who were startled by the impromptu duet.
Underwood's appearance at the CMA Awards surprised viewers as she was not on the list of performers this year. The singer also did not walk the red carpet before the awards show. While she's up for Entertainer of the Year in 2023, Underwood hasn't been to the CMAs since 2022. Loretta Lynn with Miranda Lambert again Reba McEntire.
Although Underwood has not attended the CMAs recently, she has been busy with various projects. In addition to her match with Johnson, which went down in September, Underwood recently returned to her own American Idol roots instead of a judge Katy Perry. (The panel also includes Bryan, 48, and Lionel Richie.)
“I think I can be honest and constructive, but kind,” Underwood told the broadcaster Buzz Brainard in August about what to expect from him behind the jury table. “And I think that's the whole point, because people come in and that's it [their] a dream. You are a part of someone's story from that moment on.”
Auditions for season 23 took place in August and the season will premiere on Sunday, March 9, on ABC.
