Coco Gauff wins first WTA Finals in singles to defeat Zheng Qinwen
Coco Gauff won her first WTA final by defeating Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (2) in Saturday's final.
The 20-year-old American went 2-0 and 5-3 down in the final set and had two points from one set loss.
However, he took the set to a tiebreaker and won the first six points. Zheng threatened a comeback but Gauff sealed the victory with his third match point by winning a forehand as he came to the net.
Gauff defeated two of the best players in the world – Aryna Sabalenka again Iga Swiatek – in his run to the finals at the season-ending event in
Riyadh.
Zheng was looking to cap off a season in which he reached his first major final at the Australian Open and delivered China's first Olympic singles tennis gold medal.
In the second final, Canada's Gabriela Dabrowski and New Zealand's Erin Routliffe beat Czech Republic's Katerina Siniakova and America's Taylor Townsend.
