David Henrie Talks His Reunion With Selena Gomez's 'Meaning' Wizards
Alex and Justin Russo are officially back on the small screen.
Selena Gomez he reunited with his older on-screen brother David Henrie during the first series of Witches Beyond Waverly Place. The series – the first two episodes of which aired on Disney Channel on Tuesday, October 29 – follows Justin (Henrie) as Alex (Gomez) hires him to train a young witch named Billie (Janice LeAnn Brown).
“It was good,” Henrie, 35, said to himself Us Weekly working again with Gomez, 32. “The word makes sense to me. It makes a lot of sense because I think over the years, Selena and I have met a lot of fans around the world – and their parents, by the way – who say our show means a lot to them. It was there when they needed it. It was there for them in a dark place in their life, in some cases, and gave them a much needed dose of humor and heart. So it really made a difference in the lives of many people around the world.”
I want to bring back the “spirit” of the first series, Wizards of Waverly Placewas something that was told to Henrie Us it was important to him and Gomez as players and great producers.
“Selena and I were both like, 'We want to bring back the same spirit, the same themes, the same values, and represent ourselves to the new generation,'” he explained. “But at the same time, I warmly embraced the first fan and hopefully invited him to say, 'I want to watch this with a younger person.'
In the first episode of the show, it was revealed that Justin was fired from his position as the principal of WizTech and lost his power. Despite that, he enjoys his mortal life with his wife, Giada (I'm Gianopulos) and the sons of the Romans (Alkaio Thiele) and Milo (Max Matenko). Alex, now a member of the Wizard Tribunal, arrives at his brother's door asking for his help in teaching Billie, who is prophesied to be the only one who can save the Wizard World from a mysterious threat.
The anticipation of his televised reunion with Gomez is something Henrie feels heavy on, as it has been more than 10 years since. Wizards of Waverly Place ended after a four-season run on the Disney Channel. “But the second 'act' was said, it was like Selena and I didn't miss a day,” Henrie said. “There was. The chemistry was there, the magic was there, we felt it. After that, we were like, 'We got it. Yes!'”
The characters of Billie and Roman, in particular, take on the rebellious/good two shoes that Alex and Justin had in the original series. According to Brown, 14, he and Thiele, 14, were able to follow in the footsteps of Gomez and Henrie.
“I think it happened in a certain way,” Brown said Us. “But I also feel like we are the same on and off screen. She's pretty, like, I don't want to say 'crazy,' but she definitely has a bigger brain than me. … As [for] me, I'm shiny and sweet.”
He went on to say: “I think I was also a little inspired, but I think the biggest inspiration I took was [to] pretend it's just Janice and Alkaio talking, you know? Because it's like our relationship in real life too. “
The first eight episodes of Witches Beyond Waverly Place air on Disney+ on Wednesday, October 30. Episodes will air weekly on Tuesdays on Disney Channel and stream the following day on Disney+.
