Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (DR.I.) said President Biden's farewell speech statements came too late for Thursday's statement, raising questions about the commander-in-chief's farewell speech.
“Now you are telling us. Biden speaks out against dark money, climate action, and SCOTUS term limits. I have suppressed this speech for four years,” wrote Whitehouse on social media platform X.
“That was a nice speech. If that speech had launched the re-election campaign, we would have won. If that speech had launched his presidency, we would have saved America. Now we continue to fight,” he wrote in the next post.
Whitehouse's comments criticizing Biden underscored the party's sentiments after Democrats not only lost the White House but also the majority in the Senate, giving the GOP the trifecta. Some criticized Biden for not ending his presidential campaign early, which led to Vice President Harris pursuing a presidential bid.
Throughout his time in office, Biden has proposed a few ideas that have been voiced by the Whitehouse, such as imposing term limits on the Supreme Court, but he has never disclosed these wishes in a joint speech, such as the one presented on Wednesday.
A major theme of the outgoing president's final speech focused on the consolidation of power, warning against oligarchs as President-elect Trump enters the White House.
“In a democracy, there is another danger in the accumulation of power and wealth. It destroys the sense of unity and common purpose. It creates distrust and division,” he said. “Participating in our democracy is exhausting and frustrating, and people don't feel like they've had a fair chance.”
“But we must always participate in this process,” he continued.
