Democrats refuse to say how old the 2028 nominee is

Prominent Democratic governors declined to say in multiple interviews with The New York Times whether there should be an age limit on the Democratic presidential nominee in 2028, as issues surrounding his age and mental health have ended President Biden's re-election bid.

“It's not a lifetime, it's a state of mind,” California Gov. Gavin Newsom told the New York Times, suggesting that putting a specific limit on it “would be absurd.” Newsom had said in 2023 that Biden's age was not an issue.

Among other things, Democrats have generally shielded Biden from attacks on his age or his ability to do the job ahead of his disastrous debate against Donald Trump in June. About a month after the debate, Biden dropped out of the race; his replacement on the ticket, Vice President Kamala Harris, went on to lose the election to Trump.

“When I was growing up, people who were 65 years old were almost dead,” New York Gov. Kathy Hochul told reporters. “I'm 65 years old. I'm not about to die.”

“I don't have an age test,” said New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy. “The question is: Are you in the game? Are you – we have an amazing bench, and the bench is a kind of age.”

The Times report noted that the Democratic Alliance governors they spoke to were reluctant to criticize the president.

“There is no such thing,” said New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham when asked if there should be an age limit for the 2028 election. Some Democrats did not hesitate to say that Biden could not deliver on his message.

You know, some of his, which seemed to be the problems of his life, he was not the only person who could forcefully convey the message we needed in a difficult election cycle,” Rep. Mikie Sherrill, DN.J., told the outlet. He said he is part of the Gen X Democratic presidential nominee in 2028.

North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper said Americans had just elected “a very old man,” referring to Trump, who at 78 is the oldest president ever elected. The record holder was Biden, who was just 78 shy of winning in 2020.

Voters repeatedly expressed concern about the president's age before he dropped out of the race. He would have turned 82 last month.
