Eighteen in court after a protest on behalf of Palestine

18 people appeared in court in connection with the protests in Cardiff in June against the war on Gaza.

The 10 women and eight men face charges including assaulting an emergency worker, detaining a person to cause serious disruption to South Wales Police, obstructing an officer, willfully obstructing a road, and public order.

The 18, who gave addresses in south Wales, Cornwall and Hertfordshire, have all pleaded not guilty and have all been granted unconditional bail.

They will appear again at Cardiff Magistrates' Court in the new year.

Sixteen people have been arrested after a protest took place around a table at Cardiff Bay police station on June 4, according to South Wales Police.

Police said the June arrests came hours after a man was arrested at an earlier protest, involving between 50 and 60 people, in the center of Cardiff.

The war began when gunmen led by Hamas carried out an unprecedented attack in southern Israel on October 7, 2023, in which approximately 1,200 people were killed and 251 others were captured.

The Hamas-run health ministry says the number of Palestinians killed in Gaza during the 14-month war between Israel and Hamas has exceeded 45,000.
