Fernandes and Amorim were upset by United after a good draw at Liverpool | Football news

Frustrated footballer Bruno Fernandes said if Manchester United can play at Anfield, they must “do it everywhere” after the disaster-hit side were held to a 2-2 draw by Premier League leaders Liverpool on Sunday.

Cody Gakpo canceled out Lisandro Martinez's shock strike for United on Sunday before Mohamed Salah put Liverpool ahead from the penalty spot, but Amad Diallo scored a late equaliser.

United finished the game strongly, and defender Harry Maguire spurned a last-ditch chance to win the game by firing over the bar from Joshua Zirkzee's cross.

Liverpool's point takes them six points clear of second-placed Arsenal with a game in hand. United are in 13th place, but at least they have ended their four-game losing streak.

“We've been criticized, and rightly so,” United captain Fernandes told Sky Sports. “Our position at the table says everything. We dropped too many points. Even today, we cannot be happy about the point. We need the points and we could have won the game in the end, but a good result. Both teams played good football.

“I'm sad. If we show this level in Liverpool, first in the league, why can't we do this everywhere? It frustrates me. And, I finally did the right thing. We said we need more from ourselves to get more this season.”

The midfielder said next week's FA Cup game at Arsenal will be tough for the hosts but “we want to get to the final again”.

“We know how difficult it is to play against Liverpool,” he said. “Today, we made a real effort in this game. Playing with love and heart is what will give you something from the game. You have to work hard that's why we took something from today.

“It will not end here. We have to bring this frustration to the next game to understand that this should be the standard. If we can do it at Anfield, we should do it everywhere.”

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk said it could have been worse for his side if Maguire had converted the chance late on. “Of course I'm disappointed to drop points at home but that's what we have to continue and we will do it,” he said.

“We won 2-1 and it was about trying to control the game and keep the ball for more than three and four passes. We lost the ball easily at times and opened up more than we should have. We are not perfect. We are still learning and we must learn from this as well.”

The defender said Liverpool did not underestimate United, despite their rivals' struggles this season.

“That's all the media is, media talk,” he said. “It has nothing to do with us. We have prepared for a very difficult game as we have seen today. We didn't think about that.”

United manager Ruben Amorim has endured a poor start to his spell at Old Trafford, with the club suffering six defeats in September, leading to a four-game losing streak.

“We are in a difficult time,” Amorim told Sky Sports. “If you play against Liverpool every day, we will get back places like that. But if you play with any opponent, we will have to do it. We have shown that we can do it. The way we really competed – that's what we have to go forward.

“It's not just the players, all the staff at the club. I'm happy with the performance, not the results. But I'm really mad about other games,” Amorim continued after United suffered their fourth consecutive defeat, and sixth in December, against Newcastle on Monday.

“Yes, we will improve in training, but that's how we faced the game, not in training,” he continued. “You can ask any fan – the way we fight, the way we kick, the way we fight for the ball. It is very clear.

“Today I feel like the players really wanted it. The important thing is not to rest tomorrow and go back to the same games. I will do everything for the players to understand, they have to suffer in the game. I'm really trying on the basics and we have to move forward.

“Congratulations on the performance, but not the result. Everyone will say that the players did everything right, so I'm allowed to be angry [with them for the other results] today.”
