Former NFL quarterback Chad Kelly suffers serious leg injury that rules him out of CFL playoffs

Former NFL linebacker Chad Kelly suffered a horrific leg injury his teammates couldn't even fathom during the Canadian Football League playoffs on Saturday.

Kelly, a linebacker for the Toronto Argonauts, was playing in the team's semifinal game when he was fouled in the third quarter.

When Kelly tried to get up, he soon realized that his right leg was broken, and he appeared to be trying to hold it together.

The incident was painful to watch as his colleagues began to understand what happened to the caller.

One of his teammates even fell to the ground, completely overwhelmed by what he saw as Kelly fell to the ground, seemingly horrified by what had happened.

Kelly's night is obviously over after the injury. He was 11-for-22 for 182 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions.

The Argonauts, however, went on to defeat the Montreal Alouettes, 30-28, to advance to the Gray Cup final against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

Kelly ended up breaking the tibia and fibula in his right ankle after Alouettes defensive end Isaac Adeyemi-Berglund landed on his leg while Kelly ran.

Kelly released a statement Sunday night, confirming his injury and expecting a full recovery in three to six months.

“I want to express my sincere gratitude to the doctors and medical staff at Montreal General Hospital, as well as my family, teammates and team ownership, for standing up for me throughout this experience,” Kelly said in a statement. “The incredible support from our fans means the world to me, and I'm so grateful for all the messages I've received.

“I couldn't be prouder of our team for a fantastic win, and I'm delighted that we're going to the Gray Cup. Although I regret not being able to play, I have every confidence in the team and staff that the trophy goes home where it deserves, thanks again for your amazing support – see you soon!”

Kelly, who was “Mr. Irrelevant” as the final pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, has been leading the Argonauts since being suspended nine games by the league for violating its gender-based violence policy.

Kelly was accused of sexual harassment in February by a former female assistant coach, who also sued the team for unfair dismissal.
