Founder of Guardian Angels criticizes New York Mayor, sanctuary city policies after woman's burning: 'We are in a crime crisis'
After announcing his law enforcement team, the “Guardian Angels,” would be returning to patrol the New York subway, Curtis Sliwa lashed out at New York Mayor Eric Adams and criticized the city's immigration policies, saying: “We are in. a crime problem.”
Sliwa has announced that the Guardian Angels will resume patrolling the New York subways after a woman was burned to death on a New York City subway during Christmas week. The New York Post reported that Sliwa said the group would resume patrolling the trains, going up and down inside the trains “day and night.”
The founder of Guardian Angels called the brutal subway killings “the deadly consequences of NYC remaining a sanctuary city.”
“We have 56,000 immigrants identified as criminals by ICE roaming our streets, and vulnerable homeless people left sleeping in our subways because shelters are full and dangerous,” he told X. “But Adams and City Hall pretend the city is safe and under control. ! Even though every day New Yorkers see disturbing crimes before our eyes every day!”

Distinguished by their red berets and distinctive jackets, Sliwa founded the Guardian Angels in 1979, and the group became a regular presence on the subway during the city's many years of crime and murder.
Currently, homicides on the New York subway are up 60%, according to the New York Post. The outlet reported in September that eight people were killed on the New York City subways, up from five during the same period in 2023.
After last week's brutal murder, Sliwa announced that the Guardian Angels will return to the New York subway and strengthen their presence on trains throughout the city. He said the team members will be checking the health of homeless people and report to the police and railway authorities if there are any problems.
“We will have to increase our number, increase training and be there again like we did in 1979,” said Sliwa. “We went from 13 to 1,000 then in about a year. Because the demand was there. The demand is there now again. We're going to go up. We're going to make sure we're there like we were in the '70s, '80s and '90s.”

Despite this, Adams' office criticized the Guardian Angels announcement.
Kayla Mamelak Altus, who represents Adams, told Fox News Digital that the mayor “put a thousand police officers a day on the subways, reduced total crime, and transportation crime, did real action – not theatrics.”
“Mayor Adams is committed to improving the lives of New Yorkers, which is why he often gets on the train to speak directly to everyday commuters about how we can make it safer,” said Altus.
“But you know there's still a lot of work to be done,” Altus added. “Unlike others who want attention for trivial things, Mayor Adams remains focused on real solutions.”

In response, Sliwa called on Adams to station more police officers on the subway and challenged the mayor to join him in daily surveillance of the subway to see how bad the problems have become since the surge in immigration in the city.
“Get on the train and take care of yourself,” said Sliwa, speaking directly to Adams. “I'll match him. I walk four hours a day, even with my busy job. The mayor is busy. He can do one patrol with his police. I'll run with the Guardian Angels. That's two more. We'll have what we didn't have before.”
“We are in a crime crisis, and the mayor should be happy to accept anyone's help at this time,” he told Fox News Digital. “So, if we are willing to patrol the subways where they are most needed by the cars as they move, why would the Mayor or anyone else say it's theatrics?”
“The mayor and the governor have not fulfilled their primary duty, which is to provide public safety to the people on the subway,” he continued. So, if you're not willing to do the work or maybe you can't and won't, they should accept all the help they can get from an organization known for 46 years of service to the people of New York, no questions asked.”

He said most of the attacks were carried out by “spiritually deranged people” living in the subways.
“This attack can happen anytime, anywhere, anywhere, to anyone, in any part of this city, especially on the subway,” he explained. “Shame on us for allowing that to happen. We need to rescue these people and get them mental health care. It's a shame that the mayor spent billions of our tax dollars on housing for immigrants, but not our citizens who live in the subways. The subways have become moving hotels.
“If the mayor did a good job… nobody would ask for Guardian Angels to patrol the subways,” he added. “People want police officers, and if they don't have police officers, they are more than happy to accept the work of Guardian Angels volunteers.”
