Four policemen have been killed in Mexico's most violent state

MEXICO CITY (AP) – Gunmen in northern Mexico attacked police patrols, killing four officers in a shooting that left four people wounded, authorities said Tuesday.

The attack took place on Monday in the north-central state of Guanajuato, which has the highest number of people killed in Mexico. It has long been the scene of bloody battles between rival gangs, and the state has long been among the deadliest places for police in Mexico.

Federal prosecutors said on Tuesday the attack took place in the town of Uriangato, near the border of the neighboring state of Michoacan. Among those killed in this attack was one female police officer.

The industrial and agricultural region of Guanajuato has for years been the scene of a bloody battle between the Jalisco New Generation Cartel and a local group, the Santa Rosa de Lima Cartel.
