GOP detective arrested on cyberstalking charges over surreptitious photos of store worker wearing keffiyeh
The former campaign manager of a North Carolina Republican running for state superintendent of public education is facing cyberstalking charges for allegedly taking private photos of a woman he accused of being a Hamas sympathizer.
Jennifer Sloan Rachmuth, who until June oversaw Michele Morrow's bid to become superintendent of public schools, was arrested Sunday in connection with the strange incident, which took place at a supermarket in the Raleigh area.
Rachmuth is known for his fiery online writing, according to Fox affiliate WGHPwho first reported his arrest.
Police say Rachmuth, 54, took pictures of a bakery worker who was wearing a ia kefiyehthe black and white Bedouin scarf that has become a symbol of support for the Palestinian people.
“Went to @HarrisTeeter in Holly Springs and saw this Hamas aide,” Rachmuth wrote. in the post dated 31 October in X. “When I asked her why she was wearing a keffiyeh, the shop manager told me to leave!!”
On Sunday, Rachmuth was arrested by Holly Springs PD and charged with one count of cyberstalking over an X post, made with the “intent to intimidate, harass or embarrass” a supermarket employee, according to a warrant seen by WGHP.
“Today I was arrested for making this post 4 days ago,” Rachmuth wrote on social media. “I believe the North Carolina Democratic Party is involved. I will fight this and continue to fight antisemitism on campus and in the public arena. @HarrisTeeter and @kroger have been notified.”
In an email Monday, Rachmuth said The Independent that authorities told him he was wrongly charged and that the district attorney would drop the case.
“I will be taking steps to make sure this bad thing doesn't happen to others,” Rachmuth said, without explaining why he thinks Democrats are to blame.
Morrow is a homeschool advocate whose teaching experience includes more than a stint with a Christian homeschool co-op, according to The Intercept.
