Gunmen attacked a hospital, killing a patient and two police officers in Mexico

Gunmen stormed a hospital in Mexico on Monday to attack a man recovering from a gunshot wound, killing him and two police officers, authorities said.

The attackers shot the man more than 10 times in the center of the city of Atlixco, and killed the police who tried to stop them from fleeing, said the office of the secretary of public security in the state of Puebla.

“The victim first entered the hospital on Sunday morning walking alone, as he was injured by a gunshot wound,” said Puebla security secretary Daniel Ivan Cruz in a press conference.

“On Monday morning, this person was killed by many men who entered the hospital,” he said.

“After hearing the emergency call and arriving at the scene, the police immediately shot and killed him on the spot,” he added.

Investigators were looking into whether the patient — who was around 30 years old — was involved in illegal activities, the security secretary said.

Atlixco, a popular tourist destination, welcomes thousands of visitors this time of year for the Day of the Dead festival.

Puebla has suffered brutal violence in the past. In April, authorities in the government they found seven dead bodies five of them were decapitated and one was completely dismembered – with a message on each body – from a car left in the middle of traffic on a highway. In 2022, authorities said the gunmen were “killed” nine people in a home invasion in Atlixco.

Extreme violence, much of it related to drug trafficking and gangs, has seen more than 450,000 people killed in Mexico since 2006.

On Monday, gunmen killed five members of a family in a house in the suburbs of Acapulco, a playground for the rich and famous now plagued by criminal violence, prosecutors said.

Two other people were injured in the attack in the southern province of Guerrero, which has been marred by years of bloodshed linked to drug cartels.

On Friday, there was a local leader of the sacred religion of Mexico “La Santa Muerte”. he was shot down at the altar in the image of the bones. Two other people died and eight were injured in the incident that took place in the city of Leon, in the province of Guanajuato.
