Helicopters, drones used in search of 8-year-old girl who disappeared after accident

Texas authorities are expanding their search for an 8-year-old girl who disappeared after a Christmas Eve morning crash, now considering other “targets of interest.”

Officials in Sherman, Texas said an SUV that was carrying six people from Durant, Oklahoma went through floodwaters on Highway 75 and hit a drainage ditch around 9:30 am.

Four days later, Sherman Police Chief Jason Jeffcoat said the 8-year-old girl, Clara Robinson, is still missing.

“Search teams are continuing efforts to search Post Oak Creek, near where the initial attempts took place,” Jeffcoat said. “There are also groups that want 10 miles of land on Post Oak Creek and Choctaw Creek.”

On Friday, the police department used K9 teams, dive teams, drones and helicopters to continue the search for Robinson.

The teams include personnel from the Sherman Fire Department, Sherman Police Department, Sherman Fire Rescue, Grayson County Sheriff's Office, Texas Department of Public Safety, Texas Parks and Wildlife, Texas Task Force Two, Texas Division of Emergency Management, Grayson County Office of Emergency Management. , Public Works, and Brady Baskin, a local rescue diver.

The Second Texas Task Force split up their team for the search, focusing on both the briefs and other unspecified “targets of interest.”

Sherman officials said they will continue to search for Clara until she is found.

Will Robinson, a father of four children – including Clara, died in an accident while trying to rescue a 5-year-old girl, who was unresponsive when rescuers arrived.

The girl was later reunited with her family in what fire officials called “a blessing in disguise.”

“Dad [had] a little girl hugging a girl during the event, and they weren't together afterward, so it looks like he's trying to save her — definitely,” said Sherman Fire Rescue's Bart Bowman.

“One of our guys was able to find a little girl under the water, pull her out, and give her to one of the paramedics that was with her,” Bowman said. “That paramedic took him to the ambulance, and they did CPR on the way to the hospital. … Since he almost drowned like that, it's very remarkable that he was released the next day without complications. That's a huge blessing in this tragedy.”

Members of the public told Fox 4 Will Robinson was the girls basketball coach at Durant High School in Oklahoma.

“He always brought CJ [his daughter, Clara] practice, and he will always play with us,” Kinlee Hill said.

The players noted that Robinson was an understanding coach and said that he did everything in his power to keep them in good spirits.

“He was patient with us girls,” said player Emeri Morse. “I don't think I can remember a time when he raised his voice in anger. … [He and C.J] it was completely two peas in a pod. They were practicing, always together, and CJ would just run up to him or ask for a snack.”
