For many, entering the new year will also mean getting a new driver's license.
The Real ID Act will go into effect on May 7, meaning that a government-issued driver's license or identification card will no longer get people through airports or government buildings.
Instead, they will need to get an enhanced driver's license known as Real ID.
Congress passed the Real ID Act in 2005 with the goal of creating a nationwide identification standard because driver's licenses in some states are not acceptable forms of identification for crossing borders or boarding commercial flights.
A planned launch date was announced in early 2008 but has been pushed back several times.
About 18.4 million Californians out of a population of about 40 million already had a Real ID as of Dec. 5, according to the latest data from the California Department of Motor Vehicles.
Why do I need a Real ID?
Starting May 7, only Real ID will be accepted to board domestic flights or enter government facilities such as federal courts and military bases. Traditional government-issued driver's licenses or identification cards will no longer be accepted, according to the US Department of Homeland Security.
California's Real ID has a bear and star image in the upper right corner to indicate that it is state compliant.
How do I get a real ID?
To apply for a real ID, Californians must complete an online application at REAID.dmv.ca.gov and upload their documents, according to the California Department of Motor Vehicles.
Individuals must visit a DMV office and bring their documents, application confirmation and a $35 fee to complete the application.
Here are the required documents:
- Proof of identity, including one original or certified document (such as a passport or birth certificate). Official name change documents are required if the name on the proof of identity is different from other documents.
- Proof of California citizenship, including two paper documents (such as a bank statement or utility bill).
