His body was found in a landfill in California. His son has been arrested
A 25-year-old man was arrested in Northern California after his father was found dead in a dumpster, according to police.
David Sanchez is accused of fatally shooting his 58-year-old father before leaving his body in a Union City landfill, according to a statement from the Hayward Police Department. The Alameda County Coroner's Bureau declined to release the father's name, citing the ongoing investigation by the Hayward organization.
Officials were first tipped off about the case when family members last week asked to check on the father and son's well-being, after the father did not show up for work and did not pick up his cell phone, police said.
No one answered when police arrived, but because Sanchez was on probation and consented to a warrantless search, officers searched the area, police said. No one was inside, but Hayward police said “there is evidence of a crime scene that is believed to be a homicide.”
The next day, Oakland police investigated Sanchez for an unrelated incident, but contacted Hayward investigators about his father's welfare “based on Sanchez's statement during their investigation.”
Because of the ongoing investigation into the killing by Hayward police, Sanchez was transferred to the Hayward cell, where he shared his father's body: a Union City landfill, about seven miles from their Hayward home.
The police department did not release any other details about the case, including the motive. Sanchez was booked on suspicion of murder.
