For those of us who like schlock movies, there is such a thing as “so bad it's good.” It's not meant to be a criticism, but this is a description best applied to movies that are more than the sum of their bad parts. Sometimes, the acting, plot, special effects, etc. are so terrible that they all create a kind of train wreck that is almost impossible to watch. But if you're willing to do your own Time Warp, there's one “so bad it's good” movie that's secretly great: The Rocky Horror Picture Showis a quirky comedy now streaming on Hulu.
The Original Cult Musical
If you haven't seen it The Rocky Horror Picture Show (in theaters, on TV, or on streaming services like Hulu), here's an unusual little plot: we follow the adventures of a newly engaged couple who get lost driving in the rain, forcing them to see if a nearby castle has a phone. can use. Against a meager budget of $1.4 million, it went on to gross over $170 million, making it the kind of successful comedy that Hulu is lucky to have in the streaming rotation. However, at first the film was a flop: it opened in eight cities and was quickly pulled from theaters after being a success in Los Angeles. However, a year later, a 20th Century Fox executive named Tim Deegan would convince distributors to begin showing this as a midnight movie, a decision that made the film as profitable as it unexpectedly created Hollywood history.
You see, these midnight shows drew the same fans every week, and after five months, a new tradition began where audience members would respond to the characters on screen. This led to fans forming playgroups where they would dress up as actors and act out events while the movie was playing behind them. Now, The Rocky Horror Picture Show it is the longest-running film in history, continuing to play in theaters and as part of fan shows as it is streamed on Hulu.
A Midnight Movie Is Done
Rocky Horror Picture the show didn't quite create the feel of a midnight movie, but it arguably made up for it. At this point, there are decades of deliciously decadent fan games and naughty callbacks that have kept this movie alive and well. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has a critical rating of 80 percent, with critics generally praising the out-of-this-world story as well as the vivid music and colorful characters. As for the audience, the film has an 85 percent Popcornmeter rating, which is proof that doing the Time Warp (again) always delights moviegoers of all ages.
