The seventh edition of the Next Gen ATP Finals presented by PIF will begin later this month, when the top eight players in the Top 20 and under PIF ATP Live Race To Jeddah face off in Saudi Arabia.
The ATP on Wednesday announced new features and rules for the 2024 event, which will be held from December 18-22.
The tournament, created to highlight emerging talents in tennis, continues to evolve. Several new rules for this year are designed to improve the flow of the game, including reduced warm-ups, no-rules, while other innovations include free fan movement and Tennis IQ in-game match date analysis on the coaches court.
Check out the following in Jeddah in 2024:
TESTING:
– First to 4 tie, Best of 5 sets: Each match will be a best of 5 break sets. Each set will be 1st to 4 games with a 2 game limit and a tie break (1st to 7 points with a 2 margin) played at 3-3. Each game will be played using the No-Ad score format when the Server selects the service box.
CHANGES:
– There will be no change of results after the first game.
– The players will change ends and sit down for 90 seconds after the first three games are played, and if the score of the set reaches 3:2 (that is, after two more games in the set), then again at the end of the set. (regardless of the final set of points).
– The players will change ends after six points every half-time.
– Players will sit down at the end of the set for 90 seconds, reduced from 120 seconds.
LEGAL STEPS:
– Warm-up: Players will warm up for 3 minutes on the field.
– Ball change: After 7 games.
– Serve Shot Clock: Up to 8 seconds will be allowed between the first and second serves. A ticking clock will show the time elapsed between the first and second servings.
– Time Between Points: Continuing the 2023 system, the time between points will be reduced from 25 seconds to 15 seconds if a point is less than three shots (eg.
– No Allow Rule: Play continues even if the ball touches the net during the serve, as long as it lands in the correct service box.
– Free Movement of Fans: Free movement will be allowed on the pitch for the first three matches of the match. After the first free games, fans will be allowed to move freely outside the restricted areas behind the base in direct view of the player.
– The movement of spectators in the designated areas of free movement must not involve a temporary stoppage in the shot clock.
Referee's seat: Low referee's seat to reduce fan obstruction on the pitch.
FIRST PLANS:
– Scoreboards: Simple scoreboards for improved fan use will be visible on the field to educate the younger audience that will be attending the event.
PLAYER PROGRAMS:
– Wearables: Players will be able to wear wearable items in matches. Wearable data will be summarized and visualized so players can get a comprehensive overview of their physical performance and stress responses in matches.
– In-game analysis: Tennis IQ match data platform will be available to coaches sitting courtside, and video images tagged with match data will be available after the match. New ideas will also appear on the field.
