Iran's supreme leader predicts new resistance in Syria
Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei expects a renewed Syrian opposition struggle against the country's new leadership structures after the overthrow of president Bashar al-Assad.
“We are waiting for something new [resistance] party he will build,” Khamenei said at a religious ceremony in Tehran.
Syrian youth in particular will resist those who have made their country and their future unsafe, said the teacher according to ISNA news agency.
The fall of Syria's long-time ruler was a severe blow to Iran, which has weakened its entire Middle East policy as a result.
Al-Assad was considered the most important participant in Iran's self-proclaimed “axis of resistance” against its arch-enemy Israel. Syria also served as a transit point for Iranian weapons to Hezbollah fighters in Lebanon.
The country generously supported al-Assad financially and militarily and designated the Syrian group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) – which led to the overthrow of the regime – as a terrorist organization.
