Israel bombards a Gaza hospital and refugee camp, causing more deaths
Israeli forces killed seven people when rockets fired at a hospital east of Gaza City, and a strike at a refugee camp killed nine people, Palestinian media and officials reported Sunday.
Among those killed in the shelling of the Gaza refugee camp in Nuseirat were women and children, according to the Palestinian news agency WAFA.
Another 15 people were reportedly injured in the latest airstrike in central Gaza, where the displaced Palestinians live.
The strike comes after an Israeli strike killed another seven people in Beit Hanoun in the northern Gaza Strip, according to WAFA.
Palestinian security officials earlier reported that an Israeli missile hit the fifth floor of Al-Wafa hospital, injuring others and causing people to leave the building in panic.
Israeli military officials, giving a different version, said the hospital was not being used during the attack and was instead serving as a base for Hamas' air defenses that were targeted for direct attacks.
The information from both sides could not be independently verified.
Ongoing strikes in hospitals and school buildings
Since the Israel-Gaza war began in October 2023, Israel has repeatedly hit Gaza hospitals, school buildings and refugee camps with missiles, saying Hamas fighters and weapons are hidden there.
On Saturday, Israeli soldiers completed a three-day operation at the Kamal Adwan hospital in the northern city of Beit Lahia, where they said they arrested 240 Hamas fighters.
Patients were evacuated, the hospital stopped working, parts of the buildings burned to the ground.
At least 33 hospitals in the Gaza Strip have had to be closed since the start of the war on October 7, 2023, according to Palestinian health officials.
Under international law, warring parties are not allowed to attack or recapture hospitals for reasons of war, and international legal experts say that even if hospitals are used for military purposes, this does not allow the other side to target them.
The health of patients, medical workers and others who need protection must always be considered, they said.
Since the start of the Gaza war and the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, more than 45,500 people have been killed in Israeli strikes in Gaza, according to Palestinian sources.
Projects shot in Israel
Earlier on Sunday, five explosives were fired in the northern Gaza Strip towards Israeli territory, the Israeli army reported.
Two were captured and the others are thought to have fallen into the open, according to the IDF.
An alarm sounded in Sderot, an Israeli city in the northeast of the Gaza Strip, with police reporting that rocket fragments were falling in two parts of the city. There were no initial reports of casualties.
The Palestinian army has carried out this type of attack for three days in a row. According to media reports, eight rockets have been fired in the Gaza Strip since Friday.
Rockets were fired from Beit Hanoun, which is in the northeastern corner of the Gaza Strip.
