Israel's coalition government ratifies a ceasefire agreement with Hamas

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's coalition government has approved a cease-and-desist agreement with the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas, following earlier support from the security cabinet.

After hours of negotiations, the Israeli government voted for an agreement with Hamas, Netanyahu's office announced early Saturday.

The decision was expected despite opposition from far-right ministers.

The government meeting began later than scheduled and extended into the Jewish Sabbath, which began late Friday afternoon.

After the government's decision, the opposition can appeal to the Supreme Court of Justice. However, it is unlikely that the court will intervene.

The ceasefire is scheduled to begin on Sunday at 1015 GMT.
