Jana Kramer's Husband Was 'Confused' By Her Undercover Singer Stint
Jana Kramer he wanted to continue Maskandi singer since it started in 2019 – but her husband, Allan Russellhad more doubts about the singing competition program.
“I was so happy when I got this letter, I was sitting on the couch with my husband,” Kramer, 40, said to herself. Us Weekly before his release on Thursday, November 28, on the Fox series. “I started screaming, and my husband says, 'What?' And I say, 'I was just given Maskandi singer.' And you're like, 'What?' And I say,'Maskandi singer. Don't you know what that is?'”
Kramer – whose costume was a Royal Knight – went on to show Russell, 43, clips of the show, which he often watched with his children, but he was still amused by the images of the contestants sporting the big, flamboyant costumes.
He's like, 'And you want to do that?'” Kramer recalled. “And I said, 'Yes, I do.' Like 1,000 percent!' He was confused … but I was, very happy. “…
Although Russell wasn't up-to-date on Masked Singer lore, Kramer's kids were fully on board with his decision to do the show — and he nearly blew up his place with their friends. (Kramer shares daughter Jolie, 8, and son Jace, 5, with ex-husband Mike Caussinwhile she and Russell welcomed son Roman in November 2023.)
“They were telling their friends at school, saying, 'Hey, you should really watch Maskandi singer,'” Kramer said with a laugh. “And I was like, 'Jolie, you can't say that. You can't tell them it's my mother.' He was like, 'I'm not, Mom! I'm just saying, 'You know, you really should watch it.'”
While Kramer's kids always knew it was their mom under the Royal Knight mask, other members of her family didn't — and she was excited to finally spill the beans on this week's Thanksgiving special. One person, however, immediately guessed that Kramer was at the show.
“My sister-in-law texted me last week and said, 'When are you going to tell us that you're a different person called a Royal Knight?'” the “Whine Down” host shared. “So they were thinking a little bit, and most of the time I was just playing.”
Although Kramer signed Maskandi singer partly to make his family smile, the experience ended up bringing him unexpected joy. He has released two albums and several singles, but singing as Royal Knight gave him more faith in his talents.
“I feel like I let myself have a lot of fun being in the mask,” Kramer explained. “I have to just go out and be myself. I feel like a lot of times when I go off stage — I'm not a shy person, but I'm like, 'Oh, man, I want to make sure I hit every note.' Not hitting all the notes, but I feel insecure. But when I got out there I did Maskandi singerit was like I felt confident and happy. I think that's what I lacked when I went on stage sometimes.”
Maskandi singer airs on Fox Wednesdays at 8 pm ET. New episodes air the next day on Hulu.
