Juror Accuses Mendez Brothers of Abandoning 'The Right Thing'
A judge who works on time Erik again This is Lyle Menendez's place A first-degree murder charge has been entered into the Los Angeles County District Attorney's decision to request a dismissal of the brothers' case.
George Gascón announced a recommendation that their sentences be commuted on Thursday, October 24, following renewed interest in the case.
Speaking to Australia's “Kyle & Jackie O Show” on the same day of the announcement, Hazel Thorntonwho was Juror #9 in the first murder trial of the Menendez brothers, said he supports the trial.
“I think it's a great step in the right direction and it's been a long time coming,” Thornton told the radio show, but said he doesn't support the new test. “I think a new trial will be very bad. I think the right thing to do is to be angry with them.”
He continued: “Definitely, we still have to wait and see what the judge will do, the judge has not said what he will do.” But I think the DA's recommendation for a conviction is very good.”
The case of the Menéndez brothers was brought back into the public eye after the release of the Netflix limited series Monsters and a documentary The Menendez Brothers. Erik, now 53 years old, and Lyle, now 56, were convicted of murdering their parents, José again Kittyat their home in Beverly Hills, California, in 1989 when the brothers were 18 and 21 respectively. They were eventually sentenced to life in prison without parole in 1996.
In a press conference on Thursday, Gascón said that there is a new case amid new evidence that José is accused of abusing his sons.
In his interview with the radio show, Thornton also expressed his views on the brothers, revealing that he spoke with them on the phone from time to time.
“People ask me; Would I have a problem if they moved from my neighbor's house? And I say, sure, why not? The public is not in danger if they come out,” said Thorton.
“You will find this hard to believe, perhaps, but they are very honorable. They are very nice. They are very smart. They have a sense of humor. And one of the reasons why Gascón recommends retribution is that they live an exemplary life in prison.”
He continued: “Although they never hoped to get out themselves, they helped rehabilitate those who were imprisoned with them so that they could get out.” And they made all kinds [of other things]. They have taught themselves. They get involved and create prison reform projects, and basically grow up in prison and mature.”
Thorton went on to add that he's only seen snippets of the Netflix series and refuses to watch it in its entirety due to concerns about its accuracy.
“I think it wasn't true and I actually never saw it. I will boycott you,” he said. “I've seen people send me clips. I've seen many, many scenes with Lyle and Erik as I know them. But that doesn't mean there isn't a lot of truth in this thread. It means I don't have nine hours to spend on fiction.”
