The network and fans alike, weren't buying it. “People say, 'You! Write another one,'” Sustad explained. “You can say, 'Oh my God, what if I can't?' Then everyone will know.”
The actress – who makes her Hallmark debut in 2020 Christmas By Starlight – compared stress to being a musician. “It's like writing a hit album. And then it's like, 'So where's the next song?'” she said. “I can't imagine being that singer.”

It was very disturbing,” said Sustad about his next song. “An artist is what he needs and what he always needs. So we withdrew that and wrote it differently [and] he just went in at the end.”

While writing Three Wise Men propelled Sustad to Hallmark superstardom, he has been part of the network since 2012. Two years later, he helmed his first Hallmark rom-com with The Nine Lives of Christmashe said Us it is a very accurate description of his true self.
“Marilee is me,” he said, referring to the doctor he plays in 2014 The Nine Lives of Christmas and 2021 Nine Kittens for Christmas. “This was my first introduction to Hallmark and I just brought myself to it all.”

Sustad continued, “If you can do one more or [create] another similar actor [her] that would be great. Based on the characters we played as a Miss Congeniality or something. I feel like that person.”

Although Sustad doesn't plan to reprise her role as Marilee just yet, fans will see her this holiday season. Santa Class. The film, which premieres on Saturday, December 14, also features a cameo from Campbell, who plays one of Santa's minions.

As Sustad continued to work for Hallmark, he realized how rewarding acting and writing could be – no matter what the story.
“I can't decide which one I like better now, especially if that's what you were thinking,” he said Us. “I feel like that would be rare if you write to strangers and just give it to the team. I really like the making of a joint project because we work with the producers and the director every day and work things out. “
