Martha Stewart admits she kissed a stranger in a cathedral during her wedding
Martha Stewart has revealed that she kissed a stranger in a cathedral while on her honeymoon with her now-husband Andrew Stewart.
In Netflix's upcoming documentary “Martha,” the 83-year-old recalls how she and Andrew, who tied the knot in 1961, decided to embark on a five-month honeymoon in Europe after their marriage.
In an on-camera interview with director RJ Cutler, Stewart recalled that the former couple arrived in Florence, Italy, on the eve of Easter. The TV presenter explained that she visited the famous Duomo Florence Cathedral alone while Andrew stayed in their hotel room.
“She had no interest in going to the Duomo with me,” Stewart said of her ex-husband. “I listened to that wonderful music in the cathedral … It was a romantic place, full of tourists, and I met this wonderful guy.”
He continued, “He didn't know I was married. I was a little girl sitting in church the night before Easter. He was sad. I was sad. It was because it was an emotional place. It was like nothing else. I once found a wide dome with paintings around it.

“It was like nothing I'd ever done before,” added Stewart. “And why don't you kiss a stranger?”
“Were you there, you know, what's the word I'm looking for?” Cutler asked.
“Naughty?” Stewart replied.
“Was it naughty or unfaithful?” asked the director.
“No,” Stewart said. “It wasn't naughty or dishonest. It was emotional at the time. That's how I looked at it. And it was fun because, I mean, it was a very emotional place. I wish we could all enjoy a night like that.”
Stewart and Andrew met in 1960 after her sister set them up on a blind date. At the time, he was studying at Barnard College in New York City, and was a 23-year-old student at Yale Law School.
In the film, Stewart, who was raised in a middle-class family in Nutley, New Jersey, recalls being impressed when Andrew picked her up on their first date in a yellow Mercedes sedan.
“It was like nothing I've ever done before. And why wouldn't you kiss a stranger?”
“I had never driven a Mercedes,” he said. “We went out to dinner. He was polite and nice, and he was very outgoing. It was interesting to me – a sophisticated guy. And he had an American Express card, which was a big thing in those days. And he was just interesting and playful and sweet. By the end of the dinner, I was still in love.
Stewart remembers that she visited Andrew every weekend when she was studying at Yale, and she had never slept with a man before he became her future husband. The couple tied the knot after dating for a year.
While talking with Cutler, Stewart recalled that he was fascinated by European restaurants and food and dreaded their return to New York City after their honeymoon.
“I was 19 years old and I didn't want to go home,” explained Stewart. “We're back in New York and the truth is sinking in.”
Stewart and the publisher welcomed their only child, daughter Alexis, in 1965. In the film, the businesswoman admitted that at first she had mixed feelings about becoming a mother.
“At that time, everyone was having very young children,” Stewart said. “That was like a style and I thought it was natural. And it turns out it's not natural to be a mother.”
Andrew and Stewart separated in 1987 and officially filed for divorce in 1990. In an interview with Cutler during the documentary, Stewart recalled that Andrew had many affairs during their marriage and revealed that he was also unfaithful to her.
“He was unhappy at home,” Stewart said of Andrew. “I don't know how many girlfriends he had at this time, but I think it was quite a few.”
“Girls, listen to my advice, if you're married and your husband starts cheating on you, you're a piece of s—,” she said. “Get out of that marriage.”
“But I couldn't do that. I couldn't go,” he admitted.
“Weren't you dating early?” Cutler asked.
“Yeah, but I don't think Andy ever knew about that,” Stewart replied.
“He said he knew about it,” Cutler said.
“Did he do it?” Martha asked.
“Yeah, you agreed with him,” Cutler replied. “He says he didn't stray from the marriage until he told her that he had strayed.”
“Oh, that's not true. I don't think so,” Stewart replied.
“But what's going on?” Cutler asked. “You've had an affair.”
“I had a brief relationship with an attractive Irishman,” Stewart said. “And it was nothing. It was nothing. According to– you wouldn't dissolve a marriage. I wouldn't dissolve a marriage because of that.”
“It was nothing,” he insisted. “Nothing. It was like a big church kiss.”

In “Martha,” Stewart also accused Andrew of cheating on him with his former assistant Robyn Fairclough.
“Robyn was working for me and she had lost her house or something,” he recalled.
Stewart said he told Fairclough he could go into the barn on the property the cookbook author shared with Andrew.

“When I left, Andy started going with him,” Stewart said. “It was like I took it out on Andy.”
When asked if he confronted Fairclough, Stewart confirmed that he was and “quickly dismissed him.”
“You know, what did he do? Andy betrayed me. Right in our place,” Stewart said.
“It's not good,” he added.
Three years after his divorce from Martha, Andrew married Fairclough, who was 21 years his junior, in May 1993. However, they later divorced.
Andrew is currently married to Shyla Stewart. Shyla is the president and CEO of the publishing company Fieldstone Publishing, while Andrew is its publisher, according to the business website. The couple has five children, according to People magazine.

Stewart has never remarried, although she was in an on-and-off relationship with billionaire Charles Simonyi for 15 years until they split in 2008. During an episode of “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” in 2022, Stewart revealed that she was in a relationship with Anthony Hopkins but broke up with him because she “couldn't stop thinking about him as Hannibal Lecter.”
Hopkins played serial killer Hannibal Lecter in the 1991 horror film “The Silence of the Lambs” and won an Academy Award for his performance.
In a recent interview with People magazine, Stewart revealed that she and Andrew haven't spoken in two decades.
“I haven't spoken to him in over 20 years,” he told the media. “Sadly.”
“Martha” will be available to stream on Netflix on Wednesday.
