Matlock Finale Leaves All Characters With 'Big Decisions To Make'
Expectation of MatlockThe season finale is bigger than ever — but what should viewers expect?
During a special interview with Us Weeklydirector and executive producer Kat Coiro teased how the hit CBS series will wrap its first season.
“I will say that it leaves all of our actors in positions where they have big decisions to make,” he commented. “As the show goes on, we really get to know all of our main characters, and they're all a big part of moving the show forward.”
There's already a change in the new episode, which airs on Thursday, November 14. Matty (Kathy Bates) considered quitting his job at Jacobson Moore — and quitting his job to find out which attorney withheld evidence that could have saved his daughter's life. Before he told us his decision to Olympia (Skye P. Marshall), Julian (Jason Ritter) rewarded Matty for his hard work by including him in a case involving Big Pharma.
“This was very important. I think that after fearing for his life, there was a part of Matty that was ready to throw in the towel. “For the pilot, one thing we talked about was how he thought he was going to get in and it was going to be challenging and it was going to be difficult,” Coiro noted. “But he didn't expect his deep connection with the people he worked with. From Olympia to Billy to Sarah – even the people in the situations she works in. He is such a sensitive person that it worries him a lot.”
Matty had to reach a point where he felt “emotionally” exhausted. “What happened at the end of that episode sounds like a message from the universe that he must continue,” added Coiro. “And I think he was ready to quit.”
Introduced as Madeline “Matty” Matlock, the title character first stands out because she shares the same last name as the iconic Matlock from the '80s series. Matty, on the other hand, is an ex-lawyer hoping to get hired at a prestigious law firm after falling on hard times – or so it seems.
The series later revealed that it was all an act. Matty is actually wealthy Madeline Kingston, who went undercover in the company to find out who is responsible for her daughter's death. Current suspects on Matty's list include Olympia, Julian and Senior (Beau Bridges).
While Matty is slowly getting out of the case, there's no rush to answer all the big questions at the end of the season. Fortunately, Matlock has already been renewed by CBS for a second season.
“[Creator] Jennie [Snyder Urman] he has the whole show in his head. He's like our own Matty Matlock, where everything is connected. There are many different nuances and steps. And we talked about it a lot along the way,” Coiro said Us. “And he was just taking things out of me.”
He continued: “What I respect most about his writing is that it always comes back to character development and doesn't rely on big moments. It's about watching these people get to know each other and making these two parallel stories come together. The most exciting thing about the program is that it is increasing.”
Matlock currently streaming on Paramount+. New episodes return on CBS Thursday, January 30, at 9 pm ET.
