Mayor of crime-ridden blue-collar town blasts Trump as 'threat to all common sense'

Democratic Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson called President-elect Trump “a threat to all common sense,” while saying Trump wants to dismantle public education and create a system of “chaos and chaos.”

Johnson spoke to reporters on Tuesday and took the opportunity to discuss his feelings about the incoming president, especially his stance on immigration and sanctuary cities.

The mayor acknowledged the country's challenge on immigration policy, suggesting that Trump enact laws instead of making threats.

“We are still a welcoming city. That didn't change on November 5, and it doesn't change by looking at who is in the White House and whether they want to take refuge in South America or the African continent,” said Johnson. . “This country must always be a welcoming place for new arrivals and immigrants.”

Johnson said that if Trump is committed to reforming the US, he will work with Congress to pass “reasonable” legislation that puts more border guards and judges on the border for asylum cases. But instead, Johnson said, the president and others have done the opposite and are trying to create chaos.

“He wants to create structure in a system where there is chaos and disorder,” Johnson said before turning to education. “He wants to dismantle public education, a system built by the descendants of slaves, especially in the south. He is a threat to all that is reasonable.”

Caroline Leavitt, spokeswoman for the Trump-Vance transition team, told Fox News Digital, “No policy should be considered official unless it comes from President Trump.

“The American people re-elected President Trump, giving him the authority to make good on the promises he made on the campaign trail,” Leavitt added. “He will deliver.”

Still, Johnson continued to pit Trump against the city of Chicago.

The mayor said he will not allow Trump to play with the people of this city.

If he wants to work with us, he will have a partner,” said Johnson. “But if he wants to come and threaten, then … he announced that he will oppose us.”

Johnson's comments come a week after he said at a news conference that Trump is a danger to Black families.

“His threats are not just against newcomers and undocumented families. His threats are against Black families. … We will protect undocumented people,” Johnson said at the time. “We will protect Black people, Brown people, Asian people. The city of Chicago will be better, stronger and safer no matter who is in the White House.”

Chicago residents have long been angry with Johnson and other city officials, particularly over policies to allocate taxpayer money to the illegal immigrants who have flooded the city in recent years, while the crime rate has been on the rise.

Locals stormed the Chicago City Council at a February meeting after city and county officials approved hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars to feed, clothe and house more than 35,000 immigrants moved to Chicago and its suburbs over the past year and a half.

The mayor's office did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital's request for comment.
