Murderer escapes custody in Central California; the search continues

Law enforcement is searching for a convicted murderer who escaped from custody in Central California on Monday.

Cesar Hernandez was being transported around 10:45 a.m. to appear in court at the Kern County Superior Courthouse in Delano when he escaped, according to a news release from the California Department of Corrections.

“When he arrived, Hernandez escaped from the staff cell, jumped into the van, and is currently at large,” said the department's statement.

At approximately 10:45 a.m., officers were transporting arrested suspect Cesar M. Hernandez to court. When he arrived in Delano, Hernandez escaped from police custody, jumped into a van, and is currently at large.

Agents from the department of corrections' special services and investigative services units were searching for Hernandez with the assistance of the California Highway Patrol and Farland and Delano police.

Hernandez was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison with the possibility of parole for murder, officials said. He was removed from LA County on June 27, 2019.

Hernandez, 34, is described as 5 feet 1 and 161 pounds. He has black hair and brown eyes and is wearing an orange top and pants.
