Musk and Ramaswamy fuel MAGA's war on skilled immigration and American 'mediocrity'

Trump's world heroes Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy have started an intra-MAGA war over their proposals to expand immigration visas for highly skilled workers.

Musk and Ramaswamy, appointed by President-elect Donald Trump to lead the Department of Government Employment (DOGE), say that American culture does not prioritize education enough, so foreign workers are needed for technology companies like Musk's SpaceX and Tesla.

The two have seen their swings rise in the 2024 election as they grow closer to Trump, but the wealthy businessmen now find themselves at odds with Trump's more radical base that wants to see Trump make good on promises to limit immigration and boost US workers. .

Trump limited access to visas for foreign workers during his first administration and criticized the H-1B visa program, which allows American companies to hire foreign workers for specialized jobs.

“There is a permanent lack of excellent engineering talent. It is a fundamental limiting factor in Silicon Valley,” Musk wrote in X, arguing that the tech industry needs to “double” the number of engineers working in the US today.

“The number of highly skilled AND highly motivated engineers in the USA is very low,” he added.

Musk compared hiring foreign workers to putting together a sports team. “You need to recruit top talent wherever it can be. That enables the whole team to win.”

Ramaswamy, whose parents immigrated to the US from India, supported Musk and fired back at the American public.

“American culture has valued smallness over beauty,” he wrote in X.

“It's a tradition that celebrates the prom queen over the math olympiad [sic] champ, or jock over valedictorian, will not produce the best engineers.”

That comment didn't go down well with religious conservatives like scholar Ann Coulter, commentator Laura Loomer, former Rep. Matt Gaetz and former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley.

“There is nothing wrong with American workers or American culture,” Haley wrote in a post on social media platform X. “All you have to do is look at the border and see how many want what we have. We should invest and prioritize Americans, not foreign workers.”

Haley and Ramaswamy have a long history of butting heads, starting with their 2024 Republican primary contest.

“We welcomed the tech bros when they came running to prevent a 3rd grade teacher from choosing the gender of their children — and the Biden/Harris recession,” Gaetz, R-Fla., wrote. social media posts on Thursday. “We didn't ask them to do immigration policy.”

The row began after Trump appointed venture capitalist Sramm Krishnan to serve as his AI policy adviser. That appointment sparked an anti-Indian backlash, and critics highlighted his past support for lifting the cap on green cards.
