Neil Gaiman Responds to Explosive Report of Sexual Harassment

Some booksellers are torn over whether to continue stocking Gaiman's books. Lauren Nopenz, manager and buyer at Curious Iguana, a bookstore in Frederick, Md., said the store will no longer carry Gaiman's books on its shelves, but will order copies from customers who request them. “We don't want anyone to come into the store and see books that make them feel uncomfortable,” said Nopenz. Sarah Bagby, owner of Watermark Books in Wichita, Kan., said her store will continue to sell Gaiman's work as long as there is customer demand, but may not advertise his books as much. “It is a serious situation, but we will carry him,” he said.

On social media, a number of writers expressed their shock and horror at these allegations. But other writers who were Gaiman's friends held back. Married writers Ayelet Waldman and Michael Chabon, who officiated at Gaiman's 2011 wedding to singer and writer Amanda Palmer at their home, said they were still considering the reports.

“I'm just trying to take this all in and don't know what to say,” Waldman wrote in an email.

Chabon replied in the same way: “I just don't have it in me to talk about it.”

Palmer, who split from Gaiman a few years ago, declined to comment through her spokesperson, who said that “while Ms. Palmer is deeply disturbed by the allegations that Mr. stay, the well-being of his son, therefore, in order to protect his privacy, he has no comment on these allegations. “

After Gaiman published his statement, in which he noted that “I could and should have done better” in his relationships with women, some women came forward to say they were disappointed but not surprised.

Stout shared a statement from several of them — several of whom could not be reached — in response to Gaiman's post. It reads, “We are disappointed to see the same lack of apology that women in this situation have seen many times before.”
