Netanyahu's aide was investigated by the police on the timeline of October 7
The Chief of Staff to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is being investigated by police for allegedly altering documents related to the 7th Hamas attack to portray his boss in a favorable light.
Tzachi Braverman, one of Netanyahu's closest advisers, was questioned by the Israeli police Lahav 433 major crimes unit for more than five hours on Thursday, according to Israeli media reports.
Detectives confirmed that the investigation is ongoing.
The allegations center on two phone calls Netanyahu received when the Hamas cross-border attack took place on October 7, 2023.
Braverman is accused of altering the time in writing when Netanyahu first received an update on the attack by phone from his then-military secretary, Major General Avi Gil.
The chief of staff is accused of changing the time from 06:40 to 06:29.
He denies that he changed the text of the call without changing the time.
“I know that the first call came in at 06:29, that's why I insisted on changing it,” he reportedly told detectives during interrogation.
When Gil called Netanyahu at 06:29, as the Hamas attack began, Netanyahu did not give an order, telling him to call again in 10 minutes, at 06:40, according to a report in the Haaretz newspaper.
It was during the second call that Braverman was accused of changing the time stamp to make it look like it was the first, when Netanyahu ordered Gil to check the situation with the attack on Hamas, Haaretz reported.
Allegations are that Braverman changed the time, to give the impression that the prime minister acted with great urgency and decisiveness.
The chief of staff denies that.
I 7 October attack it was the biggest military and intelligence failure in Israel's history.
Several army officers have already resigned because of it.
Netanyahu has consistently denied any personal failings.
However, his critics believe that the prime minister was the one who ultimately failed to prevent the deadliest attack in the country since the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948.
Various investigations are underway into military and intelligence failures and Netanyahu has dismissed claims that he is not complying with the demands of a full investigation.
This potential scandal is just beginning, but it could continue to seriously undermine the Prime Minister's position.
And it comes at a time when Netanyahu is in the middle the case facing corruption charges. He will have to testify in this case next month as he failed to attend the trial, believing it to be a political hunt.
