New York cardinal wagers LA archbishop over the World Series
New York against Los Angeles, the Yankees against the Dodgers, Judge against Ohtani is baked in a new section on Friday.
A few hours before the opening of the World Series, LA Archbishop José H. Gomez and New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan – the leaders of the nation's two largest Roman Catholic dioceses – placed their own bicoastal bets on the outcome of the Fall Classic .
Gomez chose Randy's Donuts as his prize to give away if the Yankees beat the Dodgers, while Dolan said he would bring New York-style donuts if Los Angeles wins.
The bet is also intended to raise awareness of the fundraising campaign for schools in both dioceses. The winning team will receive 60% of the episode, with the remaining 40% going to the runner-up.
LA-based gifts will be directed to the Catholic Education Foundation of Los Angeles, while New York dollars will head to the John Cardinal O'Connor School in Irvington, NY.

“This is going to be a great world series,” Gomez said in a statement. “Baseball really brings us together as a country, but in every rivalry there has to be a winner, and that will be the Dodgers!”
Gomez's office said his choice of Randy's, known for its famous 32-foot large metal sign visible from the 405 Freeway, is in keeping with the local culture.
“It's a Los Angeles institution along with Pink's, Philippe's and Porto's that reflects the beautiful history of the city,” said archdiocese spokeswoman Carolina Guevara. “You can't miss Randy's and it's something that can easily be enjoyed.”
Although Gomez claims to be a fan of Randy's, she also said that it was very difficult to choose her favorite type of entertainment.
Dolan's office said the cardinal was a “normal person” and liked a sesame baguette with cream cheese.
“I thank my brother, Bishop Gomez, for agreeing to this bet of friendship,” said Dolan in a statement. “I'm looking forward to three things: 1. A great World Series with the Yankees winning their 28th championship; 2. Enjoying Randy's Donuts; 3. Awareness and support for the John Cardinal O'Connor School and the Catholic Education Foundation of Los Angeles.”
While Dolan's office said New York is “blessed with the greatest bagel shops in the world,” the cardinal was stunned when he announced which establishment he would buy the goods from.
Gomez agreed to a similar bet with Cincinnati Archbishop Dennis M. Schnurr on the outcome of Super Bowl LVI. The Rams went on to beat the Cincinnati Bengals 23-20, received 60% of the $22,000 worth of LA Gomez donations and personally claimed Cincinnati's Graeter's Ice Cream. He had bet Porto's cakes.
“I know my friend Cardinal Dolan is a good sport, and I'm going to enjoy the New York bagels he's going to send me,” Gomez said. “I am also grateful for this opportunity to highlight the great work of our Catholic schools in LA and New York and throughout the country.”
Friendly sports beaches between cities are not only for clergy, as LA Mayor Karen Bass and New York Mayor Eric Adams have also agreed to bet, although the terms were not clear as of Friday.
Gov. Gavin Newsom and New York Gov. Kathy Hochul also agreed to bet on Friday. The loser will decorate his office in the colors and materials of the opposition party.
In 2014, then-Mayor Eric Garcetti bet his New York counterpart Bill de Blasio on the Los Angeles Kings-New York Rangers Stanley Cup.
The Kings won, and De Blasio was forced to perform Randy Newman's “I Love LA” on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” If Garcetti was missing, he would have sung Frank Sinatra's classic “New York, New York.”
