One person was killed, four were injured as dozens of Russian planes attacked Kyiv, Ukraine | Russia-Ukraine war News
Ukraine says its air defenses have shot down 60 of 93 Russian planes as Moscow escalates its airstrikes.
One person was killed and four others were injured when Russian jets targeted Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, military officials and civilians said, as Russia began a crackdown across the country.
The Ukrainian Air Force said its air defense planes had shot down 60 of the 93 Russian planes launched over Ukraine since early Friday.
Moscow's military has ramped up airstrikes across Ukraine in recent days, including a New Year's Day drone strike targeting central Kyiv that killed two people.
In the latest incident, a truck driver was killed by drone debris, according to Mykola Kalashnyk, acting governor of Kyiv region.
He said the debris also destroyed many houses and injured four people, including a 16-year-old boy.
The Ukrainian Air Force said another 26 drones were “lost”, in connection with Ukraine's use of electronic warfare to redirect Russian drones.
In total, Russian drones targeted nine regions across the country including Kyiv, officials said.
Residential and commercial buildings were also damaged in Donetsk region in the east and Chernihiv region in the north, the military added.
On Thursday, the Ukrainian military said it had carried out a precision strike on a Russian airstrike in Marino, in Russia's Kursk region, where Ukrainian forces still hold territory after a major offensive in August.
The Russian military said its air defenses shot down four Ukrainian missiles in the region, and the regional governor said the attack destroyed a terrace and other buildings in a nearby village.
