Outer Banks' Austin North Shares Topper's Reaction to Sarah's Pregnancy
Foreign Banks showed Sarah telling John B about her pregnancy at the end of season 4 – but how would her ex-boyfriend Topper react to the news?
During a special interview with Us Weekly following the season finale on Thursday, November 7, Austin North reveals that his character will officially let go of his feelings for Sarah (Madelyn Cline) now that she is expecting a child with John B (Chase Stokes).
“We hope this is the last nail [in the Topper and Sarah coffin] and that's it,” North, 26, said Us. “If there is, [Topper] you want the best [Sarah]. She just wants to see him safe and happy.”
North revealed that Topper's concern stems from the fact that Sarah is always involved in big events. “You see him constantly getting into these dangerous situations and it's all because of the Pogues and getting into that life,” he added. “I think people think Topper is like, 'Oh, don't hang out with the Pogues because of where they're from.' But it's about how Sarah puts her life in danger every time.”

Ahead of season 5 – which will be the final series for Netflix – North expressed her hope that Sarah's pregnancy will convince her to slow down.
“Especially now that there's a baby involved, Topper wants her to be safe and have a calm and normal life,” she added before recalling her initial reaction to Sarah and John B's story. “Sarah's pregnancy is quite a curveball. And it's in the middle of a treasure hunt, too. It's like, 'Okay, the time is right.'
When Outer Banks premiered in 2020, Sarah and Topper were in a relationship. That went down quickly when Sarah saw a spark between her and John B – and chose to follow it. Topper later made his issues with the Pogues clear amid Sarah's romance with John B.
“In Season 4, it's too late and Topper is trying to get over his love for Sarah. He's trying to move on,” North said of Topper's season 4 arc. “He has a new girlfriend, Ruthie (Mia Challis), and is probably not the best influence on him. I don't know if he deserves it, but he's trying to move forward.”
Topper's efforts to move on don't stop him from forgetting the past, however.

“[His behavior throughout season 4] make sense. It makes a lot of sense because Topper has become a giant, seen in episode 4 at sea [before the argument with the Pogues]. That's just an example of that maturity and that Topper doesn't really want to start drama,” North commented. Us. “That was a big moment for him. But JJ [Rudy Pankow] cuts him off during a surf break, and that coupled with Ruthie's pressure on him leads him to get involved in things he doesn't want to be involved in.”
The actor continued: “All this brings these feelings back to Topper where he wants to go after the Pogues. He wants to go after Poguelandia and take it from them. I think that whenever he sees Sarah – and he sees Sarah and John B – it brings up the past. … Anytime you get to jam with the Pogues [is interesting] and with good reason. John B took his girl and Papa [Jonathan Daviss] he sunk his boat and there will always be beef.”
As the networks make decisions about their programming, Us Weekly will continue to track what has been renewed and what TV shows have been canceled. After playing Topper for nearly five seasons, North found it helpful to see where his character came from.
“I definitely try to justify all the decisions he makes. I try to make every character I play human. Obviously, the world of the Outer Banks can be a little extreme,” he added. “This guy just went through it and love can make you do crazy things. … But I try to humanize everything. “
