Patrick Mahomes left the field with an ankle injury during the Kansas City Chiefs' game against the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, December 15.

The Chiefs defender, 28, injured his ankle in the fourth quarter of the game, when he was removed from his position. Carson Wentz. Mahomes is listed as doubtful to be returned by the Chiefs. While Mahomes limped off the field, he was later seen riding in the back of a cart, according to NFL footage.

“I was trying to make a play,” Mahomes said, according to the NFL. “When I threw the ball I was hit, and I haven't seen it yet, it was like someone hit me from behind, I just rolled over. It happens in football. Try to tie them but obviously it hurts a bit. Now we will follow the conditioning part and try to be ready for next week.”

Mahomes did not return to the game but watched the Chiefs defeat the Browns 21-7.

“Patrick, his right ankle is injured. It's not broken but it hurts,” said the Chiefs coach Andy Reid he said about the quarterback's ankle in an interview he had with reporters after the game, on social media. “He'll start the rehab part of it as we go, and we'll have to see how he does.”

“It's not broken, that's what I can tell you,” Reid continued. “He will be day by day as we move forward. I don't know how swollen you are or any of that.”

Mahomes suffered a high ankle injury following a combined hit while being tackled by two Cleveland Browns: defensive ends. Ogbo Okoronkwo and defensive tackle Mike Hall Jr.

“It hurts,” Reid told reporters. “It will be day by day. He could probably go back inside. He wanted to go back inside. There was no need for that.”

Pictures after the game showed Mahomes leaving the locker room being wheeled into the back of a stretcher headed for a more detailed examination of his ankles — he wasn't wearing a splint or tape on the injured area.

“Usually the next day is when you get a good understanding,” Mahomes said of his injury. “I feel that I could have finished the game in different circumstances. But I thought Carson made the right decision. He played a lot of football, and finished the game well.”

It is not yet clear whether Mahomes will be ready to play with the Chiefs in their last two games of the year. The NFL team will play the Houston Texans on Saturday, December 21, and the Pittsburgh Steelers on Wednesday, December 25.

Mahomes' injury comes after he was fined nearly $15,000 for an “act of violence” during the Chiefs' 30-21 loss to the Buffalo Bills on November 17. In the fourth quarter, Mahomes was caught on CBS cameras trying to take a shot after a big play. The NFL considered this a punishable offense for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Patrick Mahomes is proud of the way the Kansas City Chiefs played over the weekend but knows he still has to deliver to reach Super Bowl LVIII. “Hey, real quick, real quick,” Mahomes, 28, said in an NFL clip while in the team's locker room after the team's Sunday, Jan. 21, […]

Despite recent events, Mahomes has said that the fourth quarter of a football game should be “a little quieter” than the rest of the game.

“You want to be beaten,” Mahomes told reporters after the Chiefs' 30-27 victory over the Carolina Panthers on November 24. “You want to be calm in the fourth quarter. I've always said it can be a good thing as you get to the play-offs and the end of the season, you just know you've been in those times and you know how to attack it.”
