President-elect Trump is entering a debate among supporters to support the H-1B visa program

President-elect Donald Trump on Saturday appeared to wade into a heated debate among his supporters about skilled worker visas on Elon Musk's side, telling the New York Post that he's “always been in favor of visas.”

The comments come as Trump has been loyal full against each other online days over H-1B visas. Immigrant activists, including Trump supporters like Laura Loomer and Steve Bannon, subscribe to an “America First” agenda focused on creating more jobs for American citizens.

But Musk, the world's richest man, and other tech giants have long supported the H-1B visa program, which allows businesses to hire skilled workers from foreign countries. They have argued, like Musk posted earlier this week, that “there is a severe shortage of talented and motivated engineers in America.”

In another post on Saturday night, Musk added: “The reason I am in America and so many critical people who build SpaceX, Tesla and hundreds of companies that make America strong is because of the H1B.” He added: “Take a big step back and F*** YOURSELF in the face. I will fight this issue that you cannot understand.”

In response, Bannon, who served as Trump's chief strategist, he called Musk a “toddler” on social media Gettr, writing: “Someone please notify Child Protective Services–they need a 'wellness check; to this little kid” and links to Musk's tweet. Bannon has returned to political turmoil since his release from federal prison in October, where he served four months on contempt charges for refusing to comply with a subpoena in connection with the Capitol riots in Jan. 6 2021

It wasn't long after this point that Trump got on the phone with Jon Levine of the New York Post and told him: “I've always been in favor of visas. That's why we have them.”

Trump added that he “has a lot of H-1B visas in my buildings. I have been a believer in H1-B. I have used it many times. It's a great program.”

It was not immediately clear which properties Trump was talking about that rely on the H-1B program. His golf courses and clubs, including Mar-a-Lago, they have been relying on foreign workers for a long time come to the United States under the H-2B program to work as caretakers and cooks. The H-2B visa program allows employers to bring in unskilled workers from abroad for temporary jobs when there are no qualified American workers looking for jobs.

Late Saturday morning, Gov. California's Gavin Newsom also joined the conversation, posting on X that Elon Musk is “right” about needing to hire top talent. “A common goal must be applied to support the farm workers, builders, and tradesmen who build and feed our country. Top talent is top talent.” The governor tagged Musk, along with the California Farm Bureau, the California Building Industry Association and other groups.

It was unclear whether Newsom was talking about expanded visa programs, a path to legalization, or something else. A spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for clarification.
