Prince Harry Addresses Meghan Markle's Divorce Rumors
Prince Harry he talks about the rumor that he and Meghan Markle they are looking for a divorce.
“Obviously we've bought or moved house 10, 12 times,” Harry, 40, joked during the meeting. New York Times DealBook Summit in New York City on Wednesday, December 4. “Obviously we've split maybe 10, 12 more times. So it's just like, what?”
Andrew Ross Sorkinwho interviewed Harry on stage at the event, asked him about the public interest in his marriage and speculation about why he and Meghan, 43, have been attending recent events separately.
“'Why do you do, do you do independent events? Why don't you do it together?'” Sorkin, 47, asked, to which Harry replied, “Because you invited me, you should have known!”
“True,” Sorkin replied. “Is that normal for you? Second there's the subject – he's in California, he's in New York – they say, 'Well, what's going on with these two, right?' Is that a good thing for you, in a way, that there is so much interest in you?”
Harry, son of the deceased Princess Diana — all of his moves promoting tabloid fodder — he said, no, “that's not a good thing.”
The prince continued, “It's hard to keep up with it, but that's why you ignore it.” The people I feel the most sorry for are the trolls. Their hopes just build and build, and it's like, 'Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,' and it doesn't happen. So I feel sorry for them. In fact, I do.”
Harry told Sorkin that he had “no doubt” that their speech would be “spun or twisted in some way against me, and maybe you'll get trampled too. … For that, I can only apologize, but you invited me, so it's not my fault.”
Harry and Meghan, who tie the knot in 2018, moved to America after announcing in January 2020 that they planned to step down as members of the royal family. The two first lived with them Tyler Perry before moving to their home in Montecito, California, where they live with the two of them children: son Archie, 5, and daughter Lilibet, 3.
“I enjoy life [in the U.S.] and raising my kids here, it's a part of my life I never thought I'd live and it feels like the life my mother wanted for me,” Harry told Sorkin on Wednesday.
Harry said his “biggest goal” is to be “the best father and the best husband” he can be. “The reason why these things happen is because of my 10 years in the army and the values and principles that I live by,” he said. “It is getting harder and harder for people with values and principles as the world starts to change. But what I want to be known for is, 'He stuck to his principles and stayed true to those principles.'”
When I attended the NYT Summit on Wednesday, Harry also discussed how he and Meghan were left without the same level of security they had in the UK (After leaving their roles, the couple lost government-sponsored police protection during a visit to the UK. They are still suing the government to recover the bond.)
“I should never have been removed from security in the first place,” he said. “But the disclosure process has been frustrating and enlightening and I now have to sit and wait until April.”
