Sex Doesn't Sell in Hollywood

If you've spent a lot of time on social media, you may have noticed the interesting fact that young people aren't interested in cinematic sex. But loud voices thrive on social media, making it hard to tell if this was a real event or just a few bored “puriteens” having a laugh. However, now real information suggests that sex is no longer sold in Hollywood, at least for young people: a recent study by the University of California “found that 63.5 percent of young people said they prefer that the big and small stories on the screen focus on friendship, while 62.4 percent. he said that sexual content is not needed as a plot device.”
Numbers Don't Lie
Those numbers will increase on their own, but they are especially surprising when compared to other recent data. Last year, “51.5 percent of those surveyed said they wanted more content about people in platonic relationships, and 47.5 percent said they didn't want shows or movies where sex is the main plot.”
In other words, last year's data has already indicated that sex in Hollywood films is not a big draw for young viewers, and this lack of interest has grown significantly.
As always, there are many conclusions that can be drawn based on this data. For example, many on social media have pointed out that today's youth have access to uncensored and hard porn for free at the push of a button. As a result, the prospect of seeing nudity or tender sexuality in a Hollywood motion picture is not as exciting as it was for those who grew up in previous generations.
Sex Equals Bad Writing?
Others, however, believe the data suggest something different: that is, younger audiences aren't as sick of nudity and sex as they are sick of storytelling. The director of UC's Center for Scholars & Storytellers, Alisha J. Hines, thinks this data proves that “young people are tired of seeing the same old and unrelated love stories on screen.” Instead, he believes that “teenagers and young adults want to see stories that more authentically show the full spectrum of flawed relationships.”
Sure, some filmmakers may be guilty of using sex as a kind of Hollywood shorthand…something you can throw on screen for a quick scene instead of spending time developing the relationships between these characters. There was once a heated scene between the two hot actresses and it was enough to confirm that they are in love. But that doesn't reflect the real lives and relationships of the young audience, many of whom now seem to be turned off by seeing sex on screen rather than turned on.
According to a study by the Centers for Disease Control, the percentage of high school students who have never had sex jumped from 45.9 percent in 1991 to 70 percent in 2021. Fewer young people get sexually transmitted diseases. However, a possible side effect is that the lack of sex has influenced the preferences of Hollywood movies, as the actors being busy on the screen does not match the live experience of most of the youth.
Sex Still Sells
Interestingly, many Hollywood movies are full of sex despite the obvious fact that young people are not entertained by on-screen erotica as much as they used to be. Recently, Miller's girl he had an infamous sex scene with Jenna Ortega (usually a reliable draw for a younger audience) whose outspoken personality turned off many young people.
If movie studios are going to continue to produce such revealing content, they might as well target an older audience…a smart move considering that many teenagers would legitimately prefer playing video games to tuning in to a movie or TV show.
As for us, we'll be happy if our hot celebs continue to get Player 2 of their on-screen shenanigans. And if one partner wants to put the full Konami code on the other, we are completely here because.
