Sting Says Diddy's Arrest 'Doesn't Contaminate' Sample Police Song
Biting does not allow Sean “Diddy” Combs' legal battles affect his opinion on the Police song, “Every Breath You Take.”
The 73-year-old singer (real name Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner) told Los Angeles Times in an interview published on Monday, November 11, that the recent allegations against this disgraced music star have no effect on what we think about this song. Diddy, 55, sampled the song from his 1997 hit, “I'll Be Missing You,” which was also on the set. Faith Evans and an R&B group 112.
“No. I mean I don't know what happened [with Diddy],” Sting told the outlet. “But it doesn't spoil the song at all. It's still my song.”
The 17-time Grammy winner's comments come amid a flurry of allegations against Diddy, who was arrested and charged with sex trafficking and fraud in September. He remains incarcerated at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn and has been denied bail multiple times.
Diddy's latest legal troubles began in November 2023 when ex Cassie accused of sexual harassment and rape in a $40 million case. He denied his claims and the case was filed out of court one day.
After the case, several people came forward with sexual assault charges against the rapper, which eventually led to Homeland Security raiding Diddy's homes in Miami and Los Angeles in connection with the sex trafficking investigation.
Diddy's 14-page indictment was filed one day after his September 16 arrest in New York City. Court documents accuse Diddy of parties known as “Freak Offs,” which he allegedly filmed. He also allegedly “distributed a variety of controlled substances to victims” as a control strategy.
Diddy and his lawyers have vehemently denied many of the charges against him. The rapper has denied charges of sex trafficking and fraud.
“He is an imperfect person, but he is not a criminal,” his lawyer, Marc Agnifilo he told Us Weekly in a statement at the time. “Good thing for Mr. Combs has been cooperating with the investigation and voluntarily moved to New York last week in anticipation of the charges. Please reserve judgment until you have all the facts. These are the actions of an innocent man who has nothing to hide, and he is looking forward to clearing his name in court.”
However, since his arrest, Diddy has continued to face many allegations while in custody.
A named witness Courtney Burgess testified before a grand jury on October 31, saying he was given 11 flash drives containing evidence against Diddy, per NewsNation. The videos on the flash drive allegedly contain images of eight drunken celebrities who appear to be “victims” of Diddy's alleged crimes. (Us reached out to Diddy's team for comment at the time.)
Diddy's trial is scheduled for May 5, 2025. Earlier this month, he filed his fourth bail application.
