Stream The Sci-Fi Epic That Struck The World On Hulu

By Chris Snellgrove | Published

When you think about it, the holidays are a strange thing: they're all about coming together as a family, but too many Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners start with good wine and end up with the worst arguments this side of Reddit. If this sounds like your vacation experience, then you're probably longing for a time when your family can work together like normal people. For those who want to bring the family together again, here's good news: you can stream Independence Daymovie that covered the country, on Hulu today.

Independence Day is Full of Greatness

If you have never watched Independence Day (on Hulu, in theaters, and anywhere in between), you should know that it has a surprisingly simple premise. When aliens invade the planet and start killing people en masse, the fate of the entire world rests on the shoulders of a hotshot pilot and a computer genius. Whether they succeed or not, they could eventually come down to the wells of everyone from a charismatic United States president to an alcoholic Vietnam veteran.

One compelling reason to check out this creature feature is that the extraterrestrial cast includes Will Smith as a cocky pilot and Jeff Goldblum as a high-level computer technician. Bill Pullman plays the president who is facing the biggest crisis in the history of the world, and his wife is played Battlestar Galactica queen Mary McDonnell. Other memorable actors in this film include Vivica A. Fox, Brent Spiner, and Randy Quaid (which is probably the best film of his career).

Watching Independence Day on Hulu is a great way to revisit the iconic speech given by Pullman's character to unite the world against a common threat. In real life, the world certainly came together to turn this Hollywood giant into a galaxy-sized hit. Against a budget of only $75 million, the film grossed $817.4 million, a profit that ultimately prompted 20th Century Fox to release a (sad to say) sequel that was inferior in every way.

Audience Engagement

Independence Day it united the world before Hulu even had a blink of a broadcaster's eye, and it did something nearly impossible: uniting viewers and critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie has a critical score of 68 percent, with critics generally commenting that the film makes its debut with all the fun and spectacle we expect from a big summer blockbuster. As for the audience, the Popcornmeter for this movie is 75 percent, which shows that casual movie fans are generally more interested in this movie than their mainstream counterparts.

All these years later, it's clear that it was more than hype that helped make this film a monster hit. Will Smith's charisma helps him steal every scene, and his witty energy pairs well with Jeff Goldblum's sadistic armor-clad hero. For that reason, Bill Pullman is the perfect cinematic president, and after combining a rousing speech with death-defying heroes, you might wish our politicians could be a more inspiring and surprising part.

In many ways, Pullman's character underlines the heart of the film…when you revisit it Independence Day on Hulu, you might be surprised to find that this film is more than the sum of its explosive parts. Everyone remembers the awesome sight of aliens blowing up the White House, and because of that, it's hard to remember that this movie is about tearing things apart and it's about putting things back together. As we move further into the chaos of a world divided by everything from politics to social media, this movie's vision of international unity is a dream we can get behind.

Will you find Independence Day encouraging like I did when you streamed it on Hulu, or is this one movie you'd like to “welcome to Earth” by throwing down? You won't know until you check it out for yourself. Then, can you help us try to answer one burning question: how did aliens manage to travel between the stars before they invented anti-malware software?
