The Al Sharpton interview scandal is the latest in a decades-long series of controversies that have plagued the MSNBC host.
MSNBC anchor Reverend Al Sharpton is no stranger to controversy as the revelation of a so-called “pay to play” scheme casts a long shadow over the scandals that have followed him.
Last week, MSNBC admitted it “didn't know” that Vice President Kamala Harris' presidential campaign paid $500,000 to Sharpton's National Action Network nonprofit ahead of an Oct. 20 friendly interview with the Democratic nominee just weeks before the election.
After Harris lost to President-elect Donald Trump, Cost of shares FEC revealed that the Harris campaign made two donations of $250,000 to Sharpton's nonprofit in September and October. However, the MSNBC weekend host did not disclose to viewers the conflict of interest before or after the interview. He did not disclose donations to his superiors at the network, according to the Washington Free Beacon, which broke the story.

Sharpton's political lines are no secret as an open supporter of Harris and the Democratic Party, he even spoke at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. But the six-person transaction between his team and the Harris campaign is “a bridge too far” between the MSNBC affiliates, according to a network source.
While it's unclear whether Sharpton will face any consequences for the apparent conflict of interest, it marks the latest scandal to confront an outspoken activist. These are some of the conflicts he has been involved in over the past decades.
Tax issues
Sharpton has built a reputation for playing fast and loose when it comes to his taxes. In 1993, he pleaded guilty to failing to file his 1986 tax return to get two felony charges dismissed.
In 2008, it was revealed that Sharpton owed nearly $1.5 million in back taxes.
The New York Times detailed some of his financial problems over the years. In 1990, he was acquitted of criminal charges after being accused of stealing $250,000 from a youth group. Three years later, he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges after failing to file federal income taxes. One of his for-profit businesses, Raw Talent, was also arrested for not paying taxes for several years.
“Records reviewed by The New York Times show more than $4.5 million in current government and federal tax liens against him and his for-profit businesses,” the Times reported in 2014.

Promoting the Tawana Brawley rape hoax
Aside from her prominence on MSNBC, Sharpton is perhaps best known for supporting infamous rapist Tawana Brawley.
Brawley, a 15-year-old black girl, alleged in 1987 that she was kidnapped and raped by a group of white men after she disappeared for four days from her home in New York. He was covered in feces and stubble written all over his body.
Sharpton was among his closest advisers and was his most outspoken defender, stoking racial tensions across the country in the process. A grand jury ultimately found his claims false.
Sharpton himself was sued for defamation by one of Brawley's accusers, who was awarded $65,000. Sharpton's fans finally paid the money after years of saying he had no money.
To this day, Sharpton has no regrets about defending Brawley.
“I have no proof that I was misled,” Sharpton said in an interview in January 2023. “My point was that there was an allegation of this lady who was really suspicious of the others that she was accusing.”
The history of antisemitism
The prominent activist has a disturbing record of anti-Semitism over the years.
In 1991, Sharpton defended New York City College Professor Leonard Jeffries, who sparked outrage with his remarks targeting “rich Jews” who financed the slave trade and controlled Hollywood, saying they were “putting together a plan to destroy the black people.” He answered the argument by saying “”If the Jews want to carry you, tell them to tie their yarmulkes and come to my house.”

That same year, Sharpton sparked a murderous protest in Crown Heights, Brooklyn after a Jewish man struck and killed a 7-year-old black boy with his car in a horrific car accident.
At the boy's funeral, Sharpton said “The world will tell us that he was killed by accident. Yes, it was a public accident. It is a risk to allow a racist ambulance service in Crown Heights … Talk about how Oppenheimer in South Africa is sending diamonds directly to Tel Aviv and dealing with diamond dealers right here in Crown Heights.” His use of “diamond merchants” referred to Jewish jewelers. He also led protests that included chants such as “Kill the Jews!” and “No Justice, No Peace!”
The riots led to the fatal stabbing of rabbi Yankel Rosenbaum by a young black man.

The incident was investigated and no charges were filed. But after the Jewish man immigrated to Israel, Sharpton rushed to the Jewish State to hunt him down. According to the New York Daily News, a woman saw Sharpton at the airport and told him to “Go to hell” to which he replied “I'm already in hell. I'm in Israel.”
In 1995, Sharpton called a Jewish store owner in Harlem a “White interloper” after the store owner raised the rent for his black business after the store owner was given a raise by the building's owner, a Black Pentecostal church. Sharpton and his National Action Network organized weeks of protests that resulted in the shooting death of seven people and the burning of a Jewish store owner's business.
