Space science fiction has many things, but it's never more exciting than when it takes place in a fragile little death machine. Starfighters are one of the best parts of space travel, and while they may not be very useful in actual space combat, this doesn't matter when it comes to enjoying great storytelling.
Just because it might not work doesn't mean they have to be dishonest. The best astronauts use real space physics to zoom in on the face of death and destruction.
If you were a space jockey going to war, which would you choose? We are about to answer that question.
These are the best sci-fi stars.
5. SA-43 Hammerhead in Space: Above and Beyond
Space: Above and Beyond it was developed specifically to be a series about space pilots, so they had to fix their battleship. They did, and the result was the SA-43 Hammerhead.
The special effects of the 1990s were not up to the challenge of bringing the ship to life, but the design is undeniably beautiful. The design of the Hammerhead combines real-world aesthetics, modern martial arts and the slightly restricted area of local aerodynamics. Good.
Capable of flying in vacuum and in planetary space, the Hammerhead isn't as realistic as some of the fighter craft designs on this list, but it's realistic enough. In space, the ship often swings and turns like a jet in space, although it is guided by small objects that help it to turn and rotate.
Each Hammerhead carries two rail guns mounted on movable mounts. So if a fighter comes up behind you, swipe your guns to the back and shoot back.
One of the ship's most unique features is its launch and space ports. The cockpit exits the ship and exits the pressurized area of its ship. When the pilot wants to launch, he enters the cockpit and it is lowered and attached to the frame of his Hammerhead.

Unlike the other sci-fi superheroes you'll see on this list, there's nothing realistic about X-Wing. It's the same for every ship in Star Wars. They ignore Newtonian physics in favor of banking and orbiting like World War II heroes pushing into space. That is not a mistake; it's a deliberate choice George Lucas made to create as much fun out of fighting his star dogs as possible.
The standard Star Wars X-Wing is multitasking. It only seats one person, but most X-Wings also carry an astromech droid to act as a navigator, and a pinch to adjust on the go. It is capable of both space flight and space flight.
When not in combat, the X-Wing's S foils, short for strike foils, or stability foils, are usually kept closed. In this configuration, the starfighter is less deadly, but easier to pilot, especially in space. When in battle, the S-foils are locked in the attack position, forming the X shape that gives the ship its name.

The Last Starfighter is an underrated gem of the 80s and an important landmark in special effects, as one of the first films to make extensive use of computer-generated animation. Unfortunately, even with all the Cray Supercomputers they used to make it, that computer animation is not very catchy and pretty. As a result, modern viewers may not have realized how cool the film's hero ship, the Gunstar, is.

Gunstars don't just look good, they're incredibly realistic. They make the most of space physics and work the way a spaceship should. .
Of course, using the Death Blossom comes with a cost: you run out of weapons, and your ship is left for dead in space. If it were easy, it wouldn't be fun.
It is noteworthy that in The Last Starfighterthe name “Starfighter” actually refers to the Gunstar gun, not the ship itself. Now, we think of “Starfighters” as spaceships, in no small part because The Last Starfighteralthough that is not what the film intended.
2. Colony Snake in Battlestar Galactica '04

That means the audience spends a lot of time with the game's fighters, so we're lucky they did an amazing job of making them cool.
The star soldiers you saw being used by the Colonies BSG they are called Vipers, and there are several different types. When the Battlestar Pegasus appeared, later in the show, they added their new Viper Mark VIIs.
The starfighter you most likely associate with the name is the Viper Mark II, a type of ship reserved for the elderly and about to be withdrawn from Battlestar Galactica when the Cylons attack. The Viper Mark II is outdated and old, but capable, and serves the Colony ships well as they fight their way to Earth.
BSG has the best fighter launch system in science fiction. It's both incredibly fun and very effective if you're a carrier looking to launch its fighters quickly. The Vipers are pulled down through the tube and ejected from the Battlestar at high speed, giving them a chance to get out of the ship without getting hit if it's currently under heavy fire.
The arrival is a little unusual. The Vipers fly back and land on one of the mother Battlestar's landing pads, where they are loaded back into the ship's launch tubes.
Vipers are also one of the most realistic martial arts ever used in science fiction. They operate in real space physics, with the ability to use directional jets to turn 180 degrees and look back while continuing to travel in the same direction. Making the most of realistic space physics in some way, is something all the ships on this list have in common, except for the ones from Star Wars.
1. Star Babylon 5
Babylon 5 is the greatest science fiction genre that modern audiences ignore. It has been held back from modern day relevance by the computer generated space battles of the early 90s. That's a shame because among all those computer generated images are some of the best star designs in all of science fiction.
The best of Babylon 5 ships, without a doubt, Starfury. Starfury has been the standard of Earthforce for decades. The ship that Jeffrey Sinclair boarded in some disaster in the Battle of the Line. The ship Babylon 5 comes armed with, complete with this incredibly cool launch system, takes out the Starfurys, as the station shoots endless death across the universe. Starfurys might be the most logical star in this list, and the most deadly.
Babylon 5 The starfighter was jointly designed by Ron Thornton and Steve Burg. Their original intention was to use the ship as a way to demonstrate how Newtonian physics could be expressed in space combat. It is something that could be done with active models. It was only possible in CGI, and they wanted to take full advantage of being the first to use it in a television show.
Newtonian physics gives Starfurys a huge advantage over mindless starfighters. You wouldn't want to try to take a Starfury on a slow banked X-Wing. The Starfury uses psychic jets for navigation but also its four powerful engines, which allow it to maneuver in ways unmatched by any other science fiction ship.
Fly up behind the Starfeury, and you might find yourself in front of it instead. You'll only have a millisecond to meet your killer's eyes after the starship pilot uses space physics to spin his ship 180 degrees and blast you in the face with four forward-facing Starfury blasters. All while maintaining his original speed and course.
The Starfury is a ship purpose built for combat in space. It can't go into space, because that's not what it's designed to do. It also cannot generate its own jump-point, although the ship can use the existing jump gates to enter and travel through hyperspace.
Starfurys are often in combat and are heavily bombed, so they're built in a way that allows pilots to get out of them quickly. Click the panic button, and the entire cockpit detaches from the engine assembly and floats into space.
Later in the show, Babylon 5 is adding a new type of starfighter to its arsenal. They are a Starfury version called Thunderbolts and are easily distinguished from older models by their long noses.
Thunderbolts are designed to fly in and out of space, so I think that, in that sense, they have some advantage. However, Starfury's unblockable first impression and better turn radius would make it my starfighter of choice.
