The EU's top official is proposing to suspend political dialogue with Israel
EU chief Josep Borrell has proposed that EU member states suspend political talks with Israel over its war in the Gaza Strip, an EU communications source told dpa on Wednesday.
Borrell bases his proposal on the assessment of independent international organizations that Israel has violated human rights and international humanitarian law in the Palestinian territory.
This plan, presented at a meeting of EU ambassadors on Wednesday, will be discussed at a meeting of foreign ministers on Monday in Brussels.
Political dialogue with Israel is regulated by the EU-Israel Association Agreement which entered into force in 2000.
The agreement provides for regular trade to strengthen the relationship. It also states that the relationship between the parties is based on respect for human rights and democratic principles.
