The Washington Post bypassed the White House's endorsement, but a liberal tilt is still evident in the Senate and House
The Washington Post's editorial board's decision not to endorse Vice President Kamala Harris surprised observers and staff members, but the paper has endorsed Democratic candidates in the congressional elections.
The board has considered Senate and House races in Virginia and Maryland, as well as some elections, including the Democratic-leaning Washington DC city council. So far, the Post has only endorsed Democrats.
The editorial board announced on Friday that it will not nominate any candidate and will be releasing all recommendations for the upcoming presidential election. The paper has endorsed only Democratic presidential candidates, except in 1988 when it refused to endorse Democrat Michael Dukakis.

The editorial board had a problem with Cao's communication with Trump.
“Mr. Cao described himself as a “MAGA” and part of the “Trump America First camp.” He compared President Joe Biden to Communist leaders in Vietnam. He expressed that he was 'happy' with the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade,” the editorial board wrote.
The editorial board argued that Kaine, Hillary Clinton's 2016 vice-presidential running mate, is “a longtime public servant.”
The editorial board also chose to endorse Democrat Angela D. Alsobrooks over former Maryland Governor Larry Hogan in the Maryland Senate race.

“Ms. Alsobrooks can do better. She is very supportive,” the editors wrote. The editorial board has significantly endorsed Hogan, an anti-Trump Republican, in his 2018 gubernatorial re-election campaign.
“However, we are not sure if his record of administration and one-party politics would add up to success as a member of the legislature serving the interests of Maryland. It would help if Mr. Hogan announced important policy priorities, but his campaign is all about tone and process – except when he promises to respect reproductive rights, a defensive measure that has been forced on him. “Ms. Alsobrooks is clearly, with a popular, pro-choice attitude,” the editors wrote.

The editorial board criticized Harris for his economic plans and demanded the vice president answer “legitimate questions” about why he has acted on far-left policies since his 2019 presidential run.
However, the editorial board is constantly criticizing Trump for his words, public safety, and more. In 2020, the editorial board enthusiastically endorsed President Biden, as they did for Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton in 2016.
Washington Post editor Robert Kagan resigned Friday following the paper's “Democracy Dies in Dark” decision not to endorse a 2024 presidential candidate.
