The wildfire's destruction is shown in before-and-after satellite images
The Mountain Fire caused extensive damage in Camarillo Heights in Ventura County, destroying 132 structures and damaging 88 others as of Friday morning.
The new satellite images show a before and after view of several sections of the area.
The photo below shows one street in detail on October 21, weeks before the fire, on the left. The houses are located in a hilly area and are surrounded by brush.
On the right, the same area can be seen on Thursday, after the fire has passed. The damage is obvious: Many houses have burned to the ground, and the surrounding brush has burned.
The fire had grown to more than 20,400 hectares by Thursday evening, forcing thousands to evacuate and straining local services.
It swept through mountain communities around Camarillo and Moorpark, driven by offshore winds that the National Weather Service deemed “extremely dangerous.”
The photo below shows another part of Camarillo that was also destroyed by fire.
On October 21, on the left, a few homes resemble what appears to be a resort in a dry area, with swimming pools and green space. On Thursday, on the right, more than half the houses are gone, the once blue lakes turned black.
Santa Ana's strong winds were expected to ease on Friday, reducing the chances of the fire spreading further.
But threats remain with the fire only 7% contained and more than 11,700 properties still threatened, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.
The video below shows heavy smoke from the fire, blown by Santa Ana winds Wednesday, as parts of Camarillo Heights burned.
