The woman was allegedly kidnapped by her ex and released after a low speed chase
A woman suspected of being kidnapped by her ex-boyfriend in El Monte has been freed after a 21-mile freeway drive through Los Angeles and Orange counties that was at one point brought to a crawl.
According to the El Monte Police Department, a man was seen at the woman's place of business in the 10300 block of Lower Azusa Road just before 6 p.m. Saturday. The two got into an argument before the man allegedly forced the woman into his car, police said, then drove off without letting her out. The woman called a friend, who tracked the car with the Find My iPhone app and contacted law enforcement.
A Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department helicopter located the vehicle on the 5 Freeway in the Commerce area and notified the California Highway Patrol.
CHP attempted a traffic stop, but the man continued to drive, leading law enforcement on a chase of more than 20 miles.
“Spike strips were used to puncture the vehicle's tires causing it to become inoperable and catch fire” near the 405 Freeway and Westminster Avenue, police said in a statement.
But first, several police cars slowed the car down as it sped away, KCAL News footage showed, until the car stopped.
The suspect and the woman sitting in the passenger seat got out of the car, the video showed. The man walked up to the woman and kissed her while she was talking on her phone. He then went back a little towards the law enforcement officers with his arms raised and surrendered. The woman was not injured, police said.
The suspect is being held on $100,000 bail, according to the Sheriff's Department.
El Monte police said the kidnapping and escape charges will be forwarded to the Los Angeles County district attorney's office. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Police Department at (626) 580-2100.
