A teacher and a teenage student were killed and six others were injured in a school shooting in Wisconsin, police said.

Madison Police Chief Sean Barnes said the suspect, a young man who attended Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, was one of the dead. At least two students suffered life-threatening injuries.

“Today is a sad day not only for Madison, but for our entire country,” said Mr. Barnes. “We have to do a better job in our community.”

He said the police had not yet found a reason for the shooting, and the suspect's family was cooperating with the investigation.

Police responded to a 911 call of an active shooter at the Christian school around 11:00 local time (17:00GMT).

The police said they found the shooter dead when they arrived at the scene and no police fired their weapons.

There were many victims with gunshot wounds, they were rushed to the hospital.

Mr Barnes said two students were in a critical condition in hospital with life-threatening injuries. Four others are in hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

He said the police found a gun at the scene. The shooting was confined to one location, but it is unclear whether it was in a classroom or a hallway.

Officials say there is no ongoing threat to other schools or the surrounding community. The investigation is ongoing and ongoing.

A student reunification center has been established near the school building to reunite students with their parents.

“Every child, every person in that building is a victim and will forever be a victim,” Mr Barnes said.

“What started as a training day turned into a real day,” he said.
