Tim Walz's wife argues for putting tampons in all school bathrooms as part of helping children learn to read
Gwen Walz, wife of Minnesota governor and Democratic vice president Tim Walz, suggested that providing toilets in school bathrooms would help students learn to read during an appearance on Katie Couric's podcast on Sunday.
Couric asked Walz if her husband was called “Tampon Tim,” a nickname that was coined by lawmakers after he signed a bill in her state that would have put free menstrual products in all school bathrooms, including boys' rooms.
“If kids are hungry at school, what does that do to the brain and learning, you're not going to learn to read,” Walz said. “So if you're talking about learning to read and filling gaps, you better remove the barriers to that. If that's tampons, then tampons, right?”
“Remove the barriers and get to the real work of this, not getting lost in what the things are and, as some people say, you know, leveling the playing field or whatever,” he said.

The law states that menstrual products “must be available to all menstruating students in the restrooms regularly used by students in grades 4 through 12 as determined by the school district.” Since then, the moniker “Tampon Tim” has been used to highlight his progressive views in society.
“Tim and I have always been thinking about removing barriers to learning and success, and whatever that barrier is, whether it's free lunches or menstrual products or knowing who you are, everyone means everyone and some things look different for some people,” Walz said. . “People have different needs and they have different resources, but everyone means everyone and everyone.”
“So that's not a bad journey, but we look at it like this, 'What do you need to move forward, what do you need to be happy and healthy and successful and how can we effectively and in the best way help with that and then think about your bad business?'” he continued. “Then get out of the way, because again, I think those two pieces probably describe Tim. He is compassionate, he is compassionate, he removes barriers.”

Walz continued, adding that schools should “provide what we need.”
“You're doing a good job of that, but I'm also thinking, you know, then you're like 'Whose business is that, like your mind,' now I have to put a quarter in the insult jar but think to yourself, like, let's get on with the important issues that we have to deal with, let's not get caught up in personal business .”
“We see equity as getting people what they need to get to a place where we can have this conversation,” he added.
Walz also discussed sophomore Doug Emhoff's advice and support.
