Wesley Koolhof and Nikola Mektic were knocked out of the Nitto ATP semi-finals on Thursday when they lost a heartbreaking Match Tie-break to Harri Heliovaara and Henry Patten. The loss had more meaning for Koolhof, who was playing his final ATP Tour match.
After the match, Koolhof's teammates and ATP members took to the court to honor him for his outstanding performance.
“Obviously it's mixed feelings. “It's been a pleasure playing on Tour for the last 20 years, so thank you all for taking the time to come out here on center court, especially Mekta for playing with me in my last year,” said Koolhof. “It's always been a dream to end my career here in Turin at the Nitto ATP Finals, I'm very grateful and happy to end my career here, even if we didn't make it today.”
Koolhof has won 21 tour-level titles, including the 2020 Nitto ATP Finals with Mektic and the 2023 Wimbledon with Neal Skupski.
Stefanos Tsitsipas was one of the players who joined Koolhof on the pitch. The Dutchman's fiancee, Julia Goerges, was there.
“Thank you all for coming out, you had a great time,” said Koolhof. “We thank everyone for their support over the years.”
