A day before canceling his Newcastle show, Malik performed at the O2 Academy Leeds on Monday, December 2. He is scheduled to take the stage at the O2 Apollo Manchester on Wednesday, December 4.
On the opening night of the tour, Malik paid tribute to his former One Direction bandmate Liam Paynewho died at age 31 in October after falling from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Lights flickered on and off in the center of the interior, and a memorial picture was displayed on the wall when the power returned.
“Liam Payne 1993-2024,” reads the sign. “I love you brother ❤️.”
Malik previously shared a photo of himself and Payne on Instagram along with a heartfelt message.
“Liam, I found myself talking loudly, I hope you hear me. I can't help but selfishly think that there are only so many conversations we can have in our lifetime. I never got to thank you for supporting me through the hardest times of my life,” read the statement one day after Payne's passing. “When I was missing home as a 17-year-old child, you were always there with a positive attitude and a reassuring smile and let me know that you were my friend and that I loved you.”
Malik continued, “Even though you were younger than me, you were always smarter than me, you were stubborn, you had different opinions, and you didn't agree—by telling people when they were wrong. Although we have butted heads over this a few times, I always secretly respected you for it.”
The “Pillowtalk” singer added that Payne is “the most deserving member” of One Direction “in every way,” and called himself a “newborn” in comparison.
“I lost my brother when he left us and I can't explain to you what I will give you to kiss you one last time and say goodbye to you properly and tell you that I loved you and respected you very much,” wrote Malik. . “I will cherish all the memories I have with you in my heart forever, there are no words that can justify or explain how I feel right now other than trauma.”
Payne was seriously injured in his fall. The initial autopsy showed that “he may have fallen in a state of partial or complete unconsciousness” as the condition in which his body was found and his injuries suggested that “he did not take a defensive position to protect himself.” He had cocaine, benzodiazepine, crack and pink cocaine – a recreational drug usually a mixture of ketamine, MDMA and methamphetamine – in his system when he died.
Payne's November 20 funeral in Amersham, England, was attended by Malik and the remaining members of One Direction: Harry styles, Niall Horan again Louis Tomlinson. The event marked the first time the former teammates had a full reunion since Malik left the team in 2015. One Direction went on an indefinite hiatus in 2016.
